Mike Winger is spot on at 19:10 on how "love" gets twisted in the minds of people who get deceived by progressive "Christianity".

One of the more subtle deceptions that I've heard over and over from many pastors and countless Christians is put like this: "You can't "love your neighbor as yourself" if you don't love yourself first, so you need to really love yourself first in order to follow Jesus' teaching on loving your neighbor."

Can you see what's wrong there? Once a person thinks they need to work on "loving themselves", they then prioritize their own needs, wants & desires over loving God, and are turning that command upside-down, with God on the bottom of their priorities. Mike rightfully says what it gets turned around into. I just want to add to his point by mentioning this particular little deception that is very widespread.

It's very subtle, and very deceptive. Jesus is not commanding people to "love themselves", He's taking what people do already (they "love themselves" in a certain way) and telling them to love their neighbors in the same way ("...as yourself" or like you love yourself).

If you need a scripture that makes the point more clearly, I think Ephesians 5:28-29 is a slightly different application of the same point:
"So men ought to love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself. For no man ever yet hated his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it, even as the Lord loves the church."

No amount of doing good works will bring about salvation. However people who truly believe are changed on the inside therefore they repent and trust and obey Jesus. If they are not born again it is because they don't believe. Repentance is a gift from God that comes with being born again immediately upon believing. Surrendering comes because of the changed nature by the power of the Holy Spirit.

I believe that morality is built into reality. When we live morally thinks work out better in the long term. Thus we can look what works and what doesn't to confirm if those stories have any wisdom in them. I treat those stories like a thesis statement, and as of yet I haven't managed to disprove any of them. I don't expect that to convince you, so I put stats with it to show why I think somethings aren't working.

"Why does everyone need to adhere to your version of a family?"
I didn't come up with it as this is the version of the family that has been around for all of recorded history. You could dismiss God but then you would be left with natural selection seems to have chosen this structure. And there are reasons for this.

"Why don't you think gay parents aren't as good?"
To start with I know of nothing that suggests it will work out well. No Stats or studies on this. So I will again point to the video from Dave Ruben. In that he explains how kids need both masculine and feminine influences, homosexuals only have 1 of the 2. His plan to counter this is having his kid spend a lot of time with female relatives. I hope it works out for him, but I am not convinced this holds a candle to the traditional family structure in raising kids.

Homosexuals have some of the highest suicide and depression rates of any group. Originally this was thought to be caused by the discrimination, but there is no evidence of this at all. Even when we look at these rates in relation to acceptance in a country. Those stats are for an entire population, so it doesn't help us know what to do for each individual case. But I think that affirming it will not help the problems they face, but it will stop us from looking for ways to help them. I also think God told us it is wrong because he didn't set things up to work that way, and that he has a better way for them.

My pastor told me about you. This is SO refreshing. I AM a former gay identified man, came out of homosexual in 1999. In my journey in pursuing Jesus AND biblical truth surrounding how I’ve been created. I’ve been set free from homosexuality, literally. About 2 yrs ago, I was clued in on a podcast ( done by a gay man) in which Jen Hatmaker was interviewed. He quoted her as saying she uncentered herself from scripture…. And Therein we see WHY Jen now espouses a completely different gospel. I’m in ministry and my calling is to declare what Jesus has done AND whatever I can do to help rescue others from the fire ( Jude 1:23) Jesus sets that captives FREE!!!

I once went to a church that was pretty progressive. I thought it was the most genuine church I’ve ever been too. And then just like Mike said that church closed in like 5 years. It got broken apart, in a pretty upsetting way too. The fallout caused people who were some of the most devout Christian’s I know to leave the church and give up their faith completely.

A truly devout Christian should be able to leave a false church and still keep their faith. I grew up in foster care and was abused all throughout my childhood in various ways, (ironically, by the very system that was supposed to protect me, and more ironically, my parents never abused me to begin with, but I call it legal kidnapping)
- but because I had an early Christian start to my life, (by my mom nonetheless) I never blamed God. I blamed people (the system) but I never had an issue with God. Now I’m on a journey of forgiveness, a whole other issue LOL, but the point is that I never walked away from God because of what people did. The key is in understanding the difference between the kingdom of darkness, and the kingdom of light. When people do not understand that we are warring against Powers of darkness and principalities, it helps to separate God from all the evil perpetrated in the world, and upon innocent people.

Chumnley snoop Yes. We are living in a time where that is very common. Jesus being inaccurately portrayed has been for different reasons entirely. People historically depicted people in the fashion they saw as normal, and in premodern Europe, where the modern imagery of Jesus was generally done, what we now identify as white was the norm to that people. Conversely, if you look at Chinese depictions of Jesus, you will see him depicted as Asian. The modern day had continued the tradition, as historical religious art has been given its own value, and has been seen as worth continuing. It's the same reason the art depicting the Passover has Jesus and the disciples at a table sitting on chairs, which is not historically accurate.

Personally, I prefer more accurate depictions of Jesus, and if I didn't constantly see people decrying white Jesus as though they were the first to do so, or as though it were a noble pursuit for which they should be applauded, I might have joined in that cry. As it stands, I've lost the ability to care all that strongly.

If I must reveal my opinion, I'll state that I believe the casting was done for cynical self glorifying reasons, and thus I am cynical of the decision. I don't believe any conservative would have minded the casting if it were not done by the people who would do so cynically in a time when it is fashionable to do so.

I questioned that particular accusation because I don't believe it to have anything to do with Christianity.

Wow! I've been a Christian since 1975 and I spent the first 15-20 years of my Christian life reading as many books as I could find on theology and living the Christian life. From The Didache and The City of God, to C.S. Lewis, to the hundreds of pop Christian books I found in what used to be called Christian bookstores. But I pretty much stopped in the mid-90s and I'm glad I did!

The only name I recognize from his long list of "progressive Christians," i.e. heretics, @7:15 is Father Richard Rohr! Except when I listened him it was in his earliest years when he was still the head of a Catholic charismatic community in Ohio called "New Jerusalem." This was decades before the whole "cosmic Christ" and "ennagram" nonsense.

It's quite a swamp out there these days.

I also, having just bought some "Choose Your Own Adventure" books for grandkids facing a long roadie, see "progressive Christianity" as being a sort of "Choose Your Own God" version of religious belief. There really isn't an equivalent in any other religion. Though I don't know how Hinduism, with those thousands of Gods, has avoided it.

@Apeture_Explorer I may be wrong, but I think the problem is that people actually love themselves above all things, but when they don't live up to their own or others' standards, it backfires and goes internal. I can relate to hating myself, especially before I knew Christ as my Savior, although when I think about it, it was actually a self-consciousness about myself and comparing what I wanted to be with what I was, often looking out at others who I felt had it together more than me, were more handsome, better with the ladies, more well spoken, didn't wear eye-glasses, were cooler, etc. I tried so hard to make people love and adore me, but they never did. After finding that Jesus "died for us when we were yet ungodly," it did not matter that I was trying so hard to be something great but was failing. Friends who rejected me or enemies who hated me, no longer mattered. What I am trying to say is this: although it manifests as a self-hatred, the basis of it is really self-love. We make ourselves into idols that always disappoint when reality strikes.

As a former Lutheran pastor, Catholic chaplain, Phd.Theology and now retired old guy, this is the best talk I have ever heard on the false doctrines leading progressive Christianity, of all denominations, into oblivion. Living in China and sharing an African student Bible Study awakened me to how very weird, degenerate and narcissistic North American mainstream Christianity actually is and helped me see why the Faith is so powerful in Africa and is growing in the East. so grateful for Mike's work, here...i've been trying to understand what i was seeing in other people at church for a very long time, now...i concluded a while back that this was "progressive Christianity" working it's way into the daily activities of the modern church...it's the height of hubris to state that, "the Bible has to be re-interpreted by men", especially those who simply want to justify their behavior by removing things they don't like...this sounds very much like conversations i used to have with people who weren't Christians 30 years ago...

While I had not become a progressive Christian in personal belief, I had come very close to it. I’m thankful for your videos because they have helped me to repent of this way of thinking and to return to the truth that is in Christ. As I'm listening (about one third through) it's reaffirming my belief that what passes for "love" today is such a lazy and even cowardly position. It takes no commitment to pat someone on the back with a "nice" word and walk away, never really helping them. A parent who loves their child would never do that. They are committed to a degree of love that is sacrificial. That will stay with the person and help with the problem for their whole lifetime. They will not give up, ever. They may change strategies or approaches when they think they're wrong or unhelpful, but they will not give up on them. They'll be in prayer, day after day, sometimes hour after hour. God defines love through His word. So the whole, "Love is Love" mantra...is actually wanting us to NOT examine the issue around that cliché in the Light of God's eternal standards for Love. God loves us so much, He is rescuing us daily. He is not giving up on us, but He is not forcing us to accept His hand. We have free will. Honestly, I have never known a truer, finer, deeper Love than what Our Lord has shown me, and I know that Love is available to anyone who will open the door of their heart to let Jesus in.

No, I don't consider 'critiquing another human's view of their meaning or value on their own lives' to be hypocritical, as long as the critiques are not equally valid to themselves. That would be hypocritical by definition. I also would only care about, and make, critiques that have merit and that are compelling/persuading to my detractors. That last one is would be my personal moral commitment.

Hence why Pascal's Wager fails. The god of the bible is no more valid a horse to choose than any other gods envisioned by man through the ages. When betting on the wrong horse has such purported dire consequences, better to be honest about your uncertainty and abstain. Imagine you stand before an alien pantheon and tell them, "I lied to myself and deluded myself into believing another god". Better to be truthful, "I was uncertain with the nonsensical descriptions and abilities, but I always adjust as new evidence becomes available. If you only seek only blind dogmatic believers in your divine kingdom, then it is clearly no place I wish to be, regardless."

I literally consider truth, i.e. valid relations between things, to be higher than my personal dearly held conceptions of said things. I.e. truth is higher than my personal beliefs in anything, including god or gods. The people I care for are affected by my decisions, I must make them with as little hubris as humanly possible.

This is really an issue. My husband and daughter accompanied to a local United Methodist Church and we were dismayed to find they were completely okay with the LGBT lifestyle to the point of coming up with "clobber passages" to justify their stance. When I questioned this as going against the Bible and Jesus' teachings, I was told if we did not like it or accept it, we were free to leave. We had attended for three Sundays. This was prior to the the lockdowns. So disheartening.

Please don't give up searching for a church that knows Jesus and teaches the whole Bible. I moved to this area 10 years ago and have been visiting churches and praying for a church home. I never stopped expecting GOD to lead me. I watched good whole Bible teaching online until I finally heard an online message from a local church pastor. I attended there and found my church home. Keep believing, praying, and searching.

I'm sorry you experienced that kind of disappointing confusion, Sassenach Yarnie. But perhaps you did not know that the United Methodist church (as a denomination) accepts such things nowadays. They also accept abortion as a decision to be made between a woman and her doctor (i.e., not just "mother's life" exception; but for whatever reason a woman feels right to her). Sadly, it is a far cry from the church that John and Charles Wesley founded.

First, this is a really great episode. Your explanation regarding the "mechanics" of Progressive "Christianity" strike me as completely spot-on. I am about 15 minutes from the end of it and wanted to get my thoughts down before they flee from me.

What you are describing here is Gnosticism (I'm sure you know about that) and it was one of the earliest threats to Christ's church and as your talk indicates, remains so to this day and will not cease until Jesus returns.

That's a great point! One thing I think makes Progressive Christianity a mutation of Gnosticism is its truthmaking of stories about bodily pleasure. Since, I'm pretty sure, Gnosticism also rejected Jesus' humanity since they said good only comes from spiritual things. Perhaps the view of "material" has changed to be "the unenlightened past"?

I don't know who told you that, but even the oldest pages of books that have been found, if it is a page containing the name of the book, they are all labeled the way they are in the Holy Bible as we have it now. In Greek, of course. But, no, they aren't just arbitrary names. They are there because the oldest ones that have been found have the same names. You're just making stuff up, and you're right. It is pathetic.

Why don't you believe that any of those people knew Him? They sure didn't have any problem dying for Him. Paul also. But, beyond that, "there isn't a single person that wrote about Jesus that knew Him" is kind of a bold claim considering that we have half a dozen books and letters that disagree with that statement directly. I'm not sure how you think the recording of history works, but usually it is written down so it isn't lost. In the Holy Bible is a wealth of recorded history, and it also just happens to be a message from the God who created everything to save your soul.
Would you prefer that we had video footage of the crucifixion? Be reasonable.

Did you know that there was a Guru in India with millions followers who say that he performed many miracles? There are eyewitnesses that you can speak to RIGHT NOW, that are still alive. Would you accept their stories? I guarantee that you wouldn’t believe them. You would say that the were probably fooled in some way, and rightfully so! But you think that even more ignorant people in a much more ignorant world, that believed these stories and wrote about them, means that those stories are true, when they didn’t witness them themselves?

@Ro Ems "no one comes back from the dead". Exactly, and that's what makes it a miracle, and also why we can trust that Jesus is the Son of God.
The eye witnesses, beforehand were sad and terrified that Jesus was crucified. Yet after His resurrection they were persuaded by something that they had seen Jesus risen. Paul was imprisoning Christians beforehand, and was consenting unto their deaths, and after was persuaded that he had seen Jesus risen from the dead. James, and Jude were Jesus' brothers born from Mary after Him, and beforehand didn't believe that He was anything more than perhaps crazy, and after became leaders of churches and James was executed for the faith he put in Jesus.

Can you give me any sources for these "scholars who lived in Judea"? I gave you 14 sources, and I'd like to think you can give me one.
It actually says the sun was "darkened" and probably, or seemingly coinciding with an eclipse as we know it, which was also, I'm sure, divinely appointed to happen by God Himself as a sign. Which, coincidently there actually are some other historical accounts of the eclipse.
You're probably confusing that account with the account in Joshua where the sun stood still. Which, yes, I do believe was the case.
It's kind of funny to me arguing with a skeptic because I was one, and raised that way for 26 years. So, my advice to you is that you should not only trust in Jesus as Lord and Saviour unto the saving of your soul, because you've broken God's law and stand guilty just as the rest of us do, therefore out of love and to serve justice God sent His own Son born of a virgin to die for us and raise from the dead, but my other advice is that you be just as equally skeptical considering the things that you believe, or think are true. "Prove all things", as it is written. See where God leads you.

"Jesus is highly edited.' I like that phrase. This is indeed what anyone that doesn't hold a high view of Scripture does: they fit God to THEIR beliefs rather than amending their belief to fit what God's Word says. That's good. This is the 1st time I've ever heard or watched Mike Winger.

I had pneumonia and MRSA at the same time and a nurse practitioner I know said it was a "man cold" and I almost died from trying to tough it out. When I finally got to where I literally couldn't breath, I went to the ER. Good lesson to be learned there. Just because someone is a professional in their field, doesn't mean they have your best interests at heart :P That goes for pastors as well as nurses/doctors. The best thing is to read the Bible for yourself.

@sids500 Does something have to effect us personally to be wrong? If someone was personally hurt by it, does that make it wrong? Maybe I am reading into that to much, but using the word personally makes me think you believe in moral relativism. I do not, there is a right and wrong that is objective. Homosexuality is either right, or it is wrong, my experience doesn't change that.

But to answer why I have to be a bigot, it's because homosexuality is antithetical to the family structure. The family structure is the basis of all civilizations and by all metrics is incredibly awesome. It's purpose is to raise kids, which is such a difficult task that it takes a structure perfectly designed for it to be successful. The overwhelming majority of homosexual relationships abandon this purpose right off the bat. And the ones that use cloning to attempt kids anyway have an impossible task ahead of them. Dave Ruben has a video about it as he and his partner prepared for this. I hope I am wrong, but I don't think it will turn out well.

For that reason, I think homosexuality is the pursuit of love as an emotion, but without the purpose for the emotion. I believe God gave us that purpose and to reject it will only cause disaster. There was a study documented in the book "The Male Couple- How Relationships Develop". The study was made of male couple and found that 95.5% of them didn't keep sexual fidelity. It also stated that of the ones that expected sexual fidelity in their relationship, only 30% kept it. I see this as a symptom of what happens when marriage is based on emotion instead of purpose. And the same goes for heterosexual marriages, as the Bible points out there are right and wrong ways to do those too.

I won't stop them, God is the judge not me. But this is why Christian like myself can't affirm them.

@Robert Brown Sins can be forgiven, but not affirmed. Affirming is to say that the sin is right, forgiveness is to say when someone repentance from the sin it won't be held against them. Everyone has that a choice like you said, but the consequences of that choice will find Christians and no Christians alike.

It is helpful to understand that progressive churches started by trying to make the church more missional esp to urban subcultures. You are correct that some have remained more orthodox than others. My pastors were always biblically conservative while also far more inclusive and welcoming to all. I was however shocked to find that some of my friends did move away from an Evangelical view of the Bible. It is a difficult balance to navigate culture while being truly orthodox.
The bigger issue I see is the effect of poor teaching in the mega churches that fail to disciple.

I got a lot out of this.....so I will save it and listen again and again. These progressive ideas are NEW AGE. I have walked through and been associated with so many groups over my 72 years. Heard and associated with so many beliefs.....my brain feels a little scrambled right now.
I remember years ago a word of clarity was given to me at a time when my world had gone very grey. This was the word:
"I will NOT give you My light for you to walk in your own will or pathway".

Tho we didn't understand it at the time, my husband and I left a Progressive church last year, after some really unbiblical and ungodly behavior on the part of the pastor and his deacons. Near the end they aggressively pushed their political beliefs above Biblical doctrine, causing so much division..it was so hard, but we're grateful for the discernment we had to leave. We've grown so much as Believers since , that I can't regret it. I do hurt for those who are still entrenched there..😔

One of the first things I realized as a young Christian studying the Bible and theology for the first time was the the fact that I could be wrong; and not just wrong, but DECEIVED. So I settled on a foundation of doctrines that were NOT open to revision. Those doctrines are the FACTS about Jesus, the Father, and the Gospel that Christians have always believed from the beginning.

Of course, nearly 50 years later I'm pretty sure I'm right about everything else I've learned(!), but I endeavor to remain humble about it all as I walk with God.

Thank you, Mike. Everything you said was absolutely true. Partial validity does make for an absolute premise. Our Enemy has found a voice in this evidence of a lack of agreement among ourselves. We really need to understand Romans 14. Keep preaching the Truth and help us to remember that “ letter and spirit “ are both necessary. My older sister is in her late 70s. She is a vowed layperson "spiritual director" for a large order of Catholic nuns who decided to follow Buddhism in the 1980s. They don't believe in God at all and believe JESUS was just a human being who was a "good example" of what they call the "corporal works of mercy." They threw out the "spiritual works of mercy." In other words, if they feed the poor they believe they are "Christians" without believing in God !!! The Bible says in the great judgment, many will say, "Lord, Lord! Have we not done many (good things) in Your name?" But JESUS will say, "Depart from me. I never knew you, you workers of iniquity." That is them. They think they are "Christian" Catholic nuns.

Mike - thank you for sharing this with us. I am a dedicated Christian and I love Jesus.

I am a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints - who you referred to as Mormons in this speech.

I wanted to let you know that we are not in different camps. I love the Bible and I study the Bible diligently. In fact, 50% of our Sunday School study is focused on studying the Bible. I do belive that there are some small errors in the Bible, but I love it, I study it and I believe it.

Again, you and I are not on opposite ends of an argument! We are alike in perhaps more ways than you think.

@Bryan Gilliland Actually you are not claiming any Biblical truths. Read Exodus 20 Yahweh is not the only deity just one claiming he should be first. You are using one on the changes or "progressions" as they are called in this video that most Christians use.
In excluding the other concepts from the Bible that I mentioned you are also accepting that yours are not Bible based beliefs. This is why there are 30,000 Christian sects, you all just make it up and cherry pick then claim it is from the Bible. You like every other Christian have no evidence for your version but as it is yours you assume you are right so the other tens of thousands of versions are wrong.

As harsh as it probably sounds, Christianity has no purpose in becoming "Progressive". This just confuses and hurts the cause; for the sake of satiating people's feelings. The Lord never sugar coated his words or actions because it hurt the people he was effecting with them. He made you feel guilty. He made you feel bad. He made you hate what you had become and want to change. He pointed out your flaws with a firm finger in your face and a stern tone in voice. If you cried, it was because you knew he was right. Like a parent scolding a child; as it should be. And then he walks away and tells you to follow him on your own volition; leaving it to YOU to make a choice. And look how many people followed/are following him with his light genuinely in their hearts.

This progressive wave is just...nothing but a scheme to push an agenda in disguise or to just get as much money as possible because "It makes me feel good about myself." It is nothing but destructive and plain evil. Why is it evil? Because it can kill a Child of the Faith from their Faith - one of the very few actions that God has deemed as Absolutely Unforgiveable.

I am so grateful to Mike. I was totally on the path to accepting progressive Christianity until I began to watch Mike on YouTube. His teachings brought me back to the Bible as my foundation and spiritual authority and how deceptive progressive Christianity is. I was so excited to watch this sermon!

@Last Things Bible Study Correct. Except I openly and willingly acknowledge and accept that I am doing this. And herein lies the problem, you have one side (mine) that readily admits that we could be wrong and another side (yours) that demands dogmatically that they are correct because they claim to speak from God (and this "God", in your view, is exactly who and what you think He is because, again, you can't be wrong).

I find this to be very insightful. I have observed the use of 'pointing the finger' to highlight the faults of the other - in the church, politics, and indeed in many aspects of life from many sources. This seems to me to be a red flag of ungodly influence.

Years ago, I was teaching a class on Jesus throughout the Bible. I described two pictures of Jesus and asked the class to reconcile the two:
Jesus as a warm, friendly, caring, loving friend.
Jesus as a long-haired, radical, rabble-rousing, trouble-maker.
I was stunned by their simple explanation: Jesus is the former to sinners and the latter to the religious. I think the Progressive Christian would fall into the latter category.
