Overall Meaning

The lyrics of A Life (1895-1915) by Mark Hollis seem to be a reflection on the sacrifices made by soldiers who put on a uniform and fought for their countries in the First World War. The opening line, "Uniform", refers to the military dress that soldiers are made to wear. The second line, "Dream cites freedom", could suggest that soldiers may have originally felt they were fighting for freedom, but found themselves trapped in the brutal reality of war. "Avow" and "Relent" could refer to the soldiers' sense of duty and determination, despite the difficulties encountered during fighting. "Such suffering" likely reflects the harrowing experiences soldiers faced during the war.

The repetition of "And here I lay" at the end highlights the ultimate sacrifice many soldiers made, laying down their lives on the battlefield. The use of the word "lay" suggests a final resting place, perhaps in a grave, further emphasizing the permanence of their sacrifice. Overall, the lyrics seem to be a poignant tribute to the soldiers who fought and died in the First World War.

Les parfums ne font pas frissonner sa narine ;

I never met Mark Hollis, never saw him live (because when I "discovered" Talk Talk for me with SPIRIT OF EDEN, they wouldn't perform live anymore), never got any opportunity to thank him. But I want to state here that Mark Hollis had a greater influence on my life and my own work (as a novelist) than any other artist, be it writer, musician or painter. Not only through his outstanding, timeless, inspired and inspiring music, but also through his attitude regarding the industry. I believe he rests in peace, because he already teached us how to live in peace.

Please keep Mark alive in your beautiful poetry .

@Lisa Bunnie His music keeps him alive, he put his spirit in it. But I really think there should be a Mark Hollis Academy of sorts, where artists of all kinds could gather and listen and talk.

Its amazing how well Mark Hollis draws you into such a elaborate world of sound. I just can't stop listening to his stuff, especially his later work.
