Overall Meaning

The song "He Mele No Lilo" is a tribute to the last queen of Hawaii, Liliuokalani, who was overthrown in a political coup by American businessmen in 1893. The song is sung in a Hawaiian language and it basically tells the story of Lilo, who is a young girl learning how to hula. In the first verse, the singer pays her respects to Liliuokalani and talks about how the rainbow rises over the mountains and shines down on Hawaii from Kauai to Hawaii Island. In the second verse, the singer sings about the Queen and how she loves the people of Hawaii. She is the queen of the islands and is always looking up to the sky to see the beauty and the wonder of the world. The last verse is a chant that is dedicated to King Kalakaua, who was the last king of Hawaii before it was overthrown by the Americans.
