Are We in Trouble Now
Mark Knopfler Lyrics

It wasn't just the wine
Some other kind of magic
Was sending up my spine
Then I was falling
And I fell for you, and how
Darling, are we in trouble now
But we've been searching all this time
I wouldn't own up
Never would admit to flying blind
But in the Darkness
We found each other anyhow
Darling, are we in trouble now
When we'd talk it over
Love was a cry from a distant shore
Then we found each other
And all that we'd been searching for
And I'm done denying
I guess by now you know
I'm through with trying
Can't bring myself to let you go
And of all these feelings
We said we never would allow
Darling, are we in trouble now
The lyrics of Mark Knopfler's "Are We in Trouble Now" describe a romantic relationship that has developed unexpectedly and without full acknowledgement of its existence. The singer describes a feeling of magic and falling for someone, despite having been hesitant to admit feelings of vulnerability. The relationship has developed in the dark, and has only just become fully acknowledged. The singer is unwilling to let go of the love that has been found, despite the potential difficulty it may bring.
Throughout the lyrics, there is a sense of uncertainty and questioning. The title itself poses a question, "Are We in Trouble Now?" The singer seems to be grappling with the idea that what has developed may not be entirely rational or safe. They reference being "grown up," but also "flying blind" and "never admitting" to certain thoughts or feelings. Despite this, the singer is fully entrenched in the relationship and is unwilling to let go.
Overall, the lyrics of "Are We in Trouble Now" suggest a romantic relationship that has developed unexpectedly and without full acknowledgement of its existence. The singer is hesitant, but also fully entrenched in the relationship and unwilling to let it go, despite potential difficulty.

It wasn't just the music
The experience wasn't solely due to the music
It wasn't just the wine
The experience wasn't solely due to the wine
Some other kind of magic
There was an unexplainable force present
Was sending up my spine
It was causing a physical sensation in me
Then I was falling
I was becoming deeply involved
And I fell for you, and how
I fell deeply in love with you
Darling, are we in trouble now
Are we facing problems because of our love?
They say we're grown up
We're supposed to be adults
But we've been searching all this time
Yet we've spent a long time seeking something
I wouldn't own up
I would not admit
Never would admit to flying blind
I would not acknowledge that I had no idea what was going on
But in the Darkness
Despite the uncertainty and unknowns
We found each other anyhow
We still managed to discover each other
When we'd talk it over
Whenever we discussed things
Love was a cry from a distant shore
Love seemed unattainable or far away
Then we found each other
But then we found love together
And all that we'd been searching for
We discovered what we were looking for
And I'm done denying
I'm no longer denying
I guess by now you know
You probably already know
I'm through with trying
I'm finished attempting
Can't bring myself to let you go
I cannot bear to lose you
And of all these feelings
Despite all these emotions
We said we never would allow
We claimed we would never experience them
Darling, are we in trouble now
Are we facing problems because of our love?

This one kills me. His virtuoso guitar work, elegantly restrained, is as good as music gets. I’m about to replay it for the third time in a row. Bless Mark Knopfler.
