Wild Mountain Thyme
Mark Knopfler Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
And the trees are blooming,
And the wild mountain thyme
Grows around the blooming heather.
Will you go, lassie, will you go?
And we'll all go together
To pull wild mountain thyme
Will you go, lassie, go?
I will build my love a bower
By yon clear and crystal fountain,
And all around the bower,
I'll pile flowers from the mountain.
If my true love, she won't have me,
I will surely find another
To pull wild mountain thyme
All around the blooming heather.
Oh, the summertime is coming
And the trees are blooming
And the wild mountain thyme
Grows around the blooming heather
Mark Knopfler's rendition of the traditional Scottish ballad "Wild Mountain Thyme" evokes a sense of longing for both the beauty of nature and the love of another. The lyrics describe the arrival of summer as the season of blooming trees and the growth of wild mountain thyme around the heather. The opening stanza introduces the question, "Will you go lassie, will you go?" which is repeated throughout the song, along with the refrain, "And we'll all go together to pull wild mountain thyme all around the blooming heather."
The second verse adds a touch of romance, with the singer planning to build a bower for his love by the "clear and crystal fountain," surrounded by flowers from the mountain. Yet the singer seems aware that this love may not be reciprocated, and he is prepared to find another to share in the beauty of the mountain thyme.
The final stanza provides a wistful conclusion, with a repetition of the opening lines and a nod to the hopefulness of the summer season. The lyrics paint a vivid picture of the Scottish countryside and the joys of communing with nature, while also touching on the universal theme of unrequited love.
