My darling girl my darling girl
You're all that matters in this wicked world
All that matters all that matters

My darling boy my darling boy
All of my sunshine and all of my joy
You're all that matters all that matters
Well, I can't stop the pain
When it calls
I'm a man
And I can't stop the rain
When it falls, my darling
Who can?

My darling girl my darling girl
You're all that matters in this wicked world
All that matters all that matters

My darling friend my darling friend
All we've got going is love in the end

It's all that matters
All that matters

Overall Meaning

The song "All That Matters" by Mark Knopfler and Emmylou Harris is a beautiful tribute to the people who matter most in our lives. The lyrics are simple and straightforward, but they convey a deep sense of love and devotion. The song speaks of a couple who have found solace in each other amidst the chaos and pain of the world.

The first two verses are addressed to a beloved girl and boy, respectively. The singer tells them that they are all that matters in this wicked world, conveying a sense of protectiveness and care. The chorus repeats this sentiment, driving home the idea that in the end, it is the people we love who make life worth living.

The third verse explores the limits of our ability to control the world around us. The singer acknowledges that he cannot stop the pain or the rain, despite his best efforts. This vulnerability only serves to highlight the importance of those he loves. The final verse is addressed to a friend, reminding us that even in the absence of romantic love, the bonds of friendship can be just as powerful.

Thank you Mark and Emmylou for this superb song about love, a simple melody but beautiful.Love once found needs to be cherished, hold on to it.In any situation ,marriage, children, friends,love is precious,once lost may never be experienced again which leads to regret.

@rogermorgan9274

Can't get enough of these two....she is so beautiful with a voice to match and he is the master of his guitars.....exquisite...xxx

@akhan5871

Yes- and so many people forget the OTHER loves that are just as precious. Linda Ronstadt and EmmyLou have a conversation about it here on the intro to one of their duets--and you can see & feel & hear the affection between them. Then go watch Pale Blue Eyes and see the sparks fly between EmmyLou & Sheryl Crow--they are really happy to see each other and put across what the song means to them..

@akhan5871

when you see them look at each other you know what "All That Matters" really means.

@rayilvem

Mark is THE man ,but paired with Emmy lou Wow !!

@azurestocking9043

Yes, especially when you know how much they both adore their children, like most people do, and know that that's all that matters. I hope you aren't inferring anything here. Mark and Emmy Lou and their spouses have always been great friends and would be disgusted with you if you were.

@danielrose2482

To my boy, daniel... I haven’t been the best father that I’ve wanted to be but know that you’ve always been the light of my life and my reason for living, if I could take it from you I would, I love you, god how I love you

@akhan5871

if you find it keep it--it's the greatest treasure you will ever find. i was young,ignorant, stupid, egotistacal,and afraid--and i walked away from it--soon she was gone with someone else so i've spent most of the 60 years since searching for it again an regretting my mistake.

@GirlVirginian

Perspective is a beautiful thing.

@akhan5871

also i posted about Leonard Cohen & Sharon Robinson (By the way, she is stunning when she sings-especially "Boogie Street".) Admiration, maybe even a little Awe, appreciation, acceptance, honesty, enjoyment, understanding, kindness, and above all-Respect. That is my recipe for real love--that is why i implore people to cherish it if you find t for it is scarcer than any treasure and worth far more than anyone can imagine. thank you-arthur.
