Mary Did You Know?
Mark Lowry Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Mary, did you know that your baby boy
Will one day walk on water?
Mary, did you know that your baby boy
Will save our sons and daughters?

Did you know that your baby boy
Has come to make you new?
This child that you've delivered
Will soon deliver you

Mary, did you know that your baby boy
Will give sight to a blind man?
Mary, did you know that your baby boy
Will calm a storm with His hand?

Did you know that your baby boy
Has walked where angels trod?
When you kissed your little baby
You've kissed the face of God

The blind will see, the deaf will hear
And the dead will live again
The lame will leap, the dumb will speak
The praises of the Lamb

Mary, did you know that your baby boy
Is Lord of all creation?
Mary, did you know that your baby boy
Will one day rule the nations?

Did you know that your baby boy
Is Heaven's perfect Lamb?

This sleeping child you're holding
Is the great 'I Am'

Overall Meaning

Mark Lowry's "Mary Did You Know?" is a beautiful and thought-provoking Christmas carol that wonders if Mary, the mother of Jesus, fully understood the significance of who her child would become. The song begins with asking Mary if she knew that her baby boy would one day walk on water and save our sons and daughters. It then continues by asking if she was aware that her baby boy would give sight to the blind man, calm the storm with his hand, walk where angels trod, and rule the nations. The song then goes on to state that Mary's baby boy is the Lord of all creation, the perfect Lamb of Heaven, and the great "I Am." Finally, the song concludes by pointing out that the blind will see, the deaf will hear, the dead will live again, and the lame will leap, all because of Mary's baby boy.

The lyrics of "Mary Did You Know?" invite us to join Mary in pondering the wonder of who Jesus was and what he came to do. They ask us to consider the significance of a baby born in a manger who would grow up to change the world. The song highlights Jesus' divine nature and the incredible acts of compassion and love he would perform in his life. Overall, the lyrics to "Mary Did You Know?" remind us of the power and beauty of the Christmas story and the joy of celebrating the birth of Jesus.

I've enjoyed other versions, but no one sings this song like Mark Lowry. Such passion in telling the story, and when they hit those 2 high notes, the piano playing... it's chilling! I shouldn't need a song to tell me who He is, but this song captures His essence. You can almost see Mary holding our Savior! Such a testimony and ministry. Thank you, Mark!

I met Mark Lowry as a kid; I spent a good hour with him and he was a kind man. My parents were obsessed with this song and played it all the time during Christmas, and had my sisters sing it all the time too (and learn it on piano so they could sing and play for them).

What I love most, though, is the "MEN WORKING" sign in the background for the next show's set.

I read a story one time where a professional performer sung or spoke a passage of scripture. The audience gave him a standing ovation and cheers galor because his performance was so amazing. Then he went backstage and a little old gentleman that was a stage hand or custodian walked out onto the stage and spoke or sung the same passage of scripture. When he finished, there wasn't a dry eye in the audience. The older gentleman walked backstage and the professional performer met him and said "sir, you got the greatest form of applause any performer could ever receive. You moved the people into silent tears. How did you do that???" The old gentleman said "you know all the words, but I know the one who wrote them.". And I feel like there are many that perform this song "because they know words" and perform them well, but Mark knows who the one wrote the song.

Mark Lowry is the only person who can sing this song and do this song and do it right and Mark with confidence in the one he believes in. Jesus
