Patience
Mark Sandman Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I spent all day yesterday watchin' the grass grow
what I learned is that grass really grows slow
now I that I know there's no reason left for me to stay
I only wish I never heard you say

Have patience
everything will be alright
have patience
give it just a little time
everything will be alright

I spent half my afternoon sittin' at a stop sign
thinkin' about how good you look even when you're lyin'
then I lost my car in a parking lot
I bought a newspaper and I decided to walk
You said

have patience
everything will be alright
have patience
give it just a little time
everything will be alright

I spent all day long just listenin' to the doorbell ring
must have been a Sunday I could hear the choirs sing
down in the graveyard they're listenin' to the underground
they're the only ones that ever learned to calm down

patience
everything will be alright
have patience
it's really such a beautiful lie
everything will be alright
everything will be alright

everything will be al-
everything will be alright

Overall Meaning

The song "Patience" by Mark Sandman is a slow, melancholic ballad that talks about the need for patience in difficult situations. The first verse talks about the singer spending all day watching the grass grow, trying to find a reason to stay. The realization that grass grows slow and there's no reason to stay is juxtaposed against the wish that he never heard someone tell him to have patience. It's as if his patience has run out and there's no reason to hold on anymore.

The second verse talks about how the singer spends half his afternoon at a stop sign, thinking about how good someone looks even when lying. He then loses his car in a parking lot and decides to walk. The theme of patience and waiting continues as the chorus repeats the need to have patience and give time for things to be alright. The bridge talks about spending all day listening to the doorbell ring, and how the church choir is the only one that ever learned to calm down. The repetition of "everything will be alright" at the end shows that the singer is seeking comfort in the hope that things will eventually get better.

Ultimately, the song is about the struggle for patience in the face of difficult situations. The mundane tasks that the singer engages in throughout the song are symbolic of the routine and monotony of life. The lyrics are a reminder that sometimes we need to slow down, take a deep breath, and have patience because everything will eventually be alright.

Late night, couple of beers... thinking about some things that are done, and some that never will be... this song is worth a thousands of worlds in this moment

Morphine redefined music in the 90's. They in effect created a style that has never been replicated. It was original. I dare say beyond the scope of alternative music in a time when alternative music was the norm. Sandman and Morphine are a gem. A diamond in the rough in it's lyrical policies . I have many a drunken night and sober day been caught singing....oh I'm so interesting I'm so great but I'm really just a fuck up and such a waste. The amount of creativity borne of Sandman and his impact on music should never be forgotten

@SCROGY

I feel three bands in the 90"s achieved this: Morphine......Primus (who are big fans of Morphine and had Dana Colley play live on stage with them)......and My Bloody Valentine. The Night, Pork Soda and Loveless are the three BEST albums of that decade and three of the best albums of all time.
