Everything To Me
Mark Schultz Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I must have felt your tears
When they took me from your arms
I'm sure I must have heard you say goodbye
Lonely and afraid had you made a big mistake
Could an ocean even hold the tears you cried

But you had dreams for me
You wanted the best for me
And you made the only choice you could that night

[Chorus]
You gave life to me
A brand new world to see
Like playing baseball in the yard with dad at night
Mom reading Goodnight Moon
And praying in my room
So if you worry if your choice was right
You gave me up but you gave everything to me

And if I saw you on the street
Would you know that it was me
And would your eyes be blue or green like mine
Would we share a warm embrace
Would you know me in your heart
Or would you smile and let me walk on by
Knowing you had dreams for me
You wanted the best for me
And I hope that you'd be proud of who I am

[Chorus]
You gave life to me
A chance to find my dreams
And a chance to fall in love
You should have seen her shining face
On our wedding day
Oh is this the dream you had in mind
When you gave me up
You gave everything to me

And when I see you there
Watching from heaven's gates
Into your arms
I'm gonna run
And when you look in my eyes
You can see my whole life
See who I was
And who I've become

[Chorus]

Overall Meaning

The song "Everything To Me" by Mark Schultz is a tribute to the birth mother who gave him up for adoption. The opening lines of the song reveal Schultz's belief that he must have felt his birth mother's tears and heard her say goodbye when he was taken from her arms. The lyrics throughout the song express his gratitude and appreciation for the difficult decision she made to give him up for adoption so that he could have a better life. The song acknowledges the deep love that his birth mother had for him and the sacrifices she made to ensure that he would have the best possible future.

The chorus of the song is a declaration of gratitude and love towards his birth mother, thanking her for giving him life, a chance to find his dreams, and a chance to fall in love. Schultz highlights how the small moments of his childhood, like playing baseball with his dad or praying in his room, are cherished memories that he owes to his birth mother's decision to give him up for adoption. He also wonders if his birth mother would recognize him on the street or if there would be any resemblance between them.

I am almost 30 weeks pregnant and placing my son for adoption. This song gets me through every day knowing that I am doing what is best for him. I just pray that one day when he is old enough, he knows that I placed him for adoption not because I didn't want him, but because I knew it was the best option for him. He will always be my baby. (:

That is wonderful

I know this was 8 years ago... But I am 28 and I was adopted at 3 days old. I am now a mom to a three year old son. I still talk to my birth mom. I know she loves me, and I know I got a better life. You are amazing.

This comment is 8 years old, and soon your son will be too. I pray that God has blessed these last 8 years with confidence you made the right decision, that his life has been blessed and that you two are one day reunited to embrace as a mother and son should embrace. May God bless you today and forever! Amen!

Today i turn 20. 20 years ago my birth mother gave me to my momma and daddy through adoption. I have recently met my mother through facebook and i love her just as much as I could have imagined. God has been so good to me!

As an adoptee, I feel this song speaks what has been on my heart for so long. Praise God for all of those brave birthparents who have made such a difficult & beautiful decision for their children & praise God for all of the adoptive parents giving those children homes & families. I'm so thankful for both sets of parents in my life. I've been so fortunate. I have a wonderful family & I've been able to meet my birthmother on this side of heaven & have thanked her for the decision she made for me.
