19 Somethin'
Mark Wills Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I saw Star Wars at least eight times
Had the Pac Man pattern memorized
And I've seen the stuff they put inside
Stretch Armstrong, yeah

I was Roger Staubach in my back yard
Had a shoe box full of baseball cards
And a couple of Evel Knievel scars on my right arm

I was a kid when Elvis died
And my mama cried

It was 1970 somethin'
In the world that I grew up in
Farrah Fawcett harido days
Bell bottoms and eight tracks tapes
Lookin' back now I can see me
And oh man, did I look cheesy
But I wouldn't trade those days for nothin'
Oh, it was 1970 somethin'

It was the dawning of a new decade
We got our first microwave
And Dad broke down and finally shaved them old sideburns off

I took the stickers off of my Rubik's Cube
Watched MTV all afternoon
And my first love was Daisy Duke in them cut off jeans

A space shuttle fell out of the sky
And the whole world cried

It was 1980 somethin'
In the world that I grew up in
Skatin' rinks and black Trans Ams
Big hair and parachute pants
Lookin' back now I can see me
And oh man, did I look cheesy
But I wouldn't trade those days for nothin'
Oh, it was 1980 somethin'

Now I've got a mortgage and an SUV
And all this responsibility
Makes me wish (wish) sometimes (sometimes)

It was 1980 somethin'
In the world that I grew up in
Skatin' rinks and black Trans Ams
Big hair and parachute pants
Lookin' back now I can see me
And oh man, did I look cheesy
I wouldn't trade those days for nothin'
Oh, it was 1980 somethin'

1970 somethin'
Ah, it was 19 somethin'

The song "19 Somethin'" by Mark Wills is a nostalgic tribute to growing up in the 1970s and 1980s. Through the lyrics, the singer celebrates his childhood memories, describing the popular culture and experiences that defined his formative years. The first verse focuses on the 1970s; the singer reminisces about watching Star Wars multiple times, playing with Stretch Armstrong toys, and collecting baseball cards. The verse ends with a reference to Elvis Presley's death in 1977, which had a significant impact on the singer's mother. The second verse focuses on the 1980s; the singer describes getting his first microwave, watching MTV, and falling in love with Daisy Duke from The Dukes of Hazzard. Additionally, the space shuttle Challenger disaster is referenced, evoking the collective grief that people felt after the tragedy.

The chorus of the song repeats the phrase "it was [year] somethin'" and describes aspects of the singer's childhood that he wouldn't trade for anything, despite feeling cheesy or outdated in retrospect. The final verse brings the listener back to the present day, with the singer reflecting on the responsibilities and pressures of adulthood. He expresses a longing for simpler times, wishing he could go back to the 1980s and relive those moments.

Do you have any advice for me a 17 year old trying to fu
Ignite out life? What should I cherish in life and what should I not focus as much on?

Dan Hendrickson

@Christian Crihfield Im 53 years old and my experience has taught me that knowing what you really want out of life is the secret to success. If you are doing something you love you will never work a day in your life. Life is hard and it's full of ups and downs but putting your focus on and trusting in God makes it a whole lot easier. I'm not saying that troubles won't come your way but dealing with those troubles is easier when you have a relationship with God.
