Two Bits
Marley's Ghost Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I got two bits and you got a dollar.
Don't need no Coup De Ville to have ourselves a ball, girl.
*Cause I know a juke box that won't stop blastin',
and I got two bits...
Girl you look so fine, the sun shining through your dress.
Let's make a mess of your feather bed tonight!
But first I wanna dance with you, I wanna make it last.
Get my two bits worth, babe!
When you flash those eyes, how they tantalize me!
Something's got a hold of my soul.
When you move your hips and you lick your lips,
I wanna hold on till I lose control!
Put on your CD, mama, it's just you and me.
We'd better pull the shades, we're such a sight to see!
'Cause we got the rhythm and sweet harmony.
It just takes two bits, baby!
When you flash those eyes, how they tantalize me!
Something's got a hold of my soul.

When you do those things, when you queen my king,
I wanna hold on till I lose control!

Overall Meaning

Marley's Ghost's song "Two Bits" is essentially about two people who are attracted to each other's physical appearances and are looking to have some fun without needing a lot of money. The singer has two bits while his partner has a dollar, but that doesn't matter because they are going to have a great time regardless. They know of a jukebox that plays great music and they are going to dance the night away. The song also mentions the physical attraction between the two, with the singer admiring the sight of his partner and her tantalizing gaze. The lyrics imply that the two are going to get intimate eventually, with the line "Let's make a mess of your feather bed tonight!" However, before that, they want to dance and have some fun, listening to the jukebox.

The lyrics of the song are fairly straightforward and don't require a lot of interpretation. The song is just about two people having fun and being attracted to each other. There's no real depth to it, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. Sometimes simplicity is enjoyable, and "Two Bits" is a catchy tune that encourages listeners to let loose and have a good time.

Frank Finley’s Marley terrified me as a kid. That bone chilling scream scared the hell out of me every time.

@DazMaad

Same hear Sean. Frank finlay's portrayal of Jacob marley gave me nightmares for months and months, what a performance though!

The 1984 Marley's eyes are clouded over the way an actual dead bodies would get

The scene with Marley’s ghost is my favorite too…the best in my opinion is the 1971 version with Albert Finney. It’s the spookiest Marley. Still, in all of them, the scene has a touch of lightheartedness, even comedy. I’d love to see a modern remake - not one that changes or embellishes on the story, as some have, but one that follows the original story and makes it really creepy…it’s a ghost story, after all.
