True to Myself
Marley Ziggy Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Life has come a long way since yesterday, I say
And its not the same old thing over again, I say
Just do what you feel and don't you fool yourself, I say
'Cause I can't make you happy unless, I am I say I say I

Got to be true to myself
Got to be true to myself
Got to be true to myself
Got to be true to myself

Day in day out I've asked many questions, I say
Only to find the truth it never changes, I say
If you don't deal with it it keeps killing you a little by little, I say
Call me selfish if you will my life I alone can live, I say I say I

Got to be true to myself
Got to be true to myself
Got to be true to myself (in a way all)
Got to be true to myself

I don't care if it hurts
I'm tired of lies and all these games
I've reached a point in life no longer can I be this way
Don't come crying to me I too have shed my share of tears
I'm moving on yes I'm grooving on well I'm finally free I've

Got to be true to myself
Got to be true to myself
Got to be true to myself
Got to be true to myself

Got to be true
Got to be true
Got to be true to myself (in a way all)

Got to be true

Got to be true
Got to be true to myself

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Ziggy Marley's "True to Myself" are about staying true to oneself in a world that constantly tries to change and manipulate people. The first verse discusses how life is always changing and how we should not let ourselves be fooled by others. Ziggy sings that he cannot make anyone happy unless he is true to himself. The chorus repeats the phrase "got to be true to myself" three times, emphasizing the importance of staying true to oneself.

The second verse talks about how asking questions can lead to finding the truth, but only if you deal with it. Ziggy suggests that not dealing with the truth can gradually destroy a person. He then asserts that his life is his own to live, and he will not apologize for being true to himself. The last four lines of the verse suggest that he has been hurt by others and is tired of playing games, but he is moving on and is finally free.

The final chorus is a cry for being true to oneself, and Ziggy chants "got to be true" six times before repeating the refrain "got to be true to myself" three times. The song ends on this empowering assertion that being true to oneself is the key to happiness and freedom.

Bob is smiling at his kids from heaven now.

This is an anthem for all us: to be true to who we are, regardless of what others might want us to be.

@Caduceustrous

I would never say this type of thing lightly, nor should any of us, but Ziggy has truly emulated his Father's spirit of musical ingenuity with the portrayal of his beliefs, thoughts on life, spirituality, human connection, and love through his songs. Bob would be proud to sing next to every one of his sons, but Ziggy definitely carried his torch further than most.
