Rainbow
Marmalade The Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

[Chorus]
Rainbow, Look me up look me down, rainbow, You were fun to have around
I was dreamin', Of the love I had to share, Never thinkin', You were here you were there

Not a word, not a sound, could see or even feel the ground
A pot of gold, I was sold, by the way you let it fly

[Chorus]

Rainbow, Look me up look me down, Rainbow, You were fun to have around
Now I'm changing, for the better for the day, Feel like singing all the colors you convey

Come on home, Keep me warm, And love me till the new day?s born
And I pray, You will stay, For ever in my eyes

[Chorus]

Overall Meaning

The song "Rainbow" by Marmalade has a catchy and upbeat melody that perfectly complements its lyrics. The song appears to be about the fleeting nature of love and how it can suddenly appear and disappear as if by magic, leaving one mesmerized and longing for more. The chorus, "Rainbow, look me up look me down, rainbow, you were fun to have around" seems to personify love as a rainbow, almost as if it were a whimsical character that had momentarily graced the singer's life.

The lyrics in the verses suggest that the singer was dreaming of love, not realizing that it had already arrived and taken flight. The phrase "not a word, not a sound, could see, or even feel the ground," alludes to the feeling of being swept away in a moment of love, leaving one disconnected from the reality of the world around them. The line "a pot of gold, I was sold, by the way you let it fly" plays on the idea of the pot of gold at the end of a rainbow, suggesting that the singer had been enchanted and fooled by an ephemeral love that they had thought was a permanent treasure.

However, the last verse of the song takes a more positive turn, suggesting that the singer has learned from this transitory experience and is now "changing for the better." The rainbow, which was once a symbol of fleeting love, is now something that inspires the singer to "sing all the colors" of life. The final lines of the song, "come on home, keep me warm and love me until the new day's born, and I pray you will stay forever in my eyes," show that the singer is still hopeful for a love that will last.

Overall, "Rainbow" is a fun and upbeat song with insightful lyrics that explore the complexities of human emotions and the fleeting nature of love.

Marmalade never got the recognition they deserved as musicians. This beautiful acoustic pop-folk song is their crowning moment. Blow that mouth harp, Dean!

Maybe they didn't get the recognition 11 years ago but they now have almost 2 million views on "Rainbow" and not to mention "Reflections of my life" their biggest hit has over 38 million views, so no we can be fairly sure that Marmalade has secured their place in Rock & Roll History, on YouTube and other venues!

This is simply a track of pure beauty.
I was only seven when my Dad, sadly no longer with me, played this song, and I was just smitten. I've loved them eversince. Beautiful compositional skills that created an unpretentious and irresistible sound. Marmalade are very special 🧡
