Happy
Maroon 5 Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

So this is Christmas
And what have you done
Another year over
And a new one just begun

And so this is Christmas
I hope you have fun
The near and the dear ones
The old and the young

A very Merry Christmas
And a Happy New Year
Let's hope it's a good one
Without any fear

And so this is Christmas
For weak and for strong
The rich and the poor ones
The world is so wrong

And so Happy Christmas
For black and for white
For yellow and red ones
Let's stop all the fight

A very Merry Christmas
And a Happy New Year
Let's hope it's a good one
Without any fear

And so this is Christmas
And what have we done
Another year over
A new one just begun

And so Happy Christmas
We hope you have fun
The near and the dear ones
The old and the young

A very Merry Christmas
And a Happy New Year
Let's hope it's a good one
Without any fear

War is over

If you want it
War is over now

Overall Meaning

Maroon 5's song "Happy Christmas (War is Over)" is a cover of John Lennon and Yoko Ono's classic holiday tune. The lyrics capture the spirit of the season - reflection on the past year and hope for the upcoming one. The opening verse sets the tone for the song, asking the listener to evaluate what they accomplished throughout the year. The song then moves to a message of inclusivity and love, wishing everyone a happy holiday regardless of race, age, or economic status. The lyric "The world is so wrong" acknowledges the struggles we face as a global community but encourages listeners to put their differences aside and celebrate together. The final verse reminds listeners that "War is over if you want it," with the sentiment that the power to create a peaceful world is within each of us.

This reminds me of why I first started listening to Maroon 5, brings back memories of their old sound. I like them now, but it's not the same, anyone agree?

Vandicoup

I love their newer songs too, they're truly beautiful as well. Artists are allowed to experiment and try new and cool things all the time. There's nothing wrong with that. Animals is their only horror-esque song and I always loved that about them. + the music video for it was chilling. Something straight out of a horror movie too and I absolutely dig that. I dig them willing to push the boundaries constantly. Like what Maroon 5's lead guitarist once said about their new style of music: We're evolving. -- And I couldn't agree more with that. You can't nor should do the same old thing over and over again. It will get bland, boring and stale real soon and then all you old fans will complain about that instead. Sorry, not.

Yeah, if you listen closely you'll notice the ending part of the main guitar part is from She Will Be Loved

Wonderful cover! Reminds me of their simpler days...  Their newer stuff is pretty good, but just doesn't compare. Hopefully they'll do a full circle back to this sound eventually, because it's obviously not lost on them.

@Mary Graaff But I never mentioned their live performances. I'm talking about their studio recordings.

@JustStayDown90 That's your own assumption about them, though. If you actually looked into their production process then you would know that that isn't true. If it's only "Adam Levine and a MIDI" then why do they have a 6-7 member team when touring? Watching them play live at any point refutes your opinion. Just because a band sounds a certain way in the studio that you assume the whole band wasn't involved in, doesn't make it true. Maroon 5 has always held the fact that their studio albums and their live shows are completely different. Once you see the band members playing instruments live on any song from their last 2 albums then you can't say it's "just Adam and computerized instruments". The whole "they're not a band anymore", "it's just Adam" excuses are just tiresome and old, especially when they're not rooted in any actual facts.
