In 2001, the band regrouped, with guitarist James Valentine added to the line-up, and pursued a new direction under the name: Maroon 5. At this point, Jesse Carmichael switched to playing the keyboards and this has become his main instrument in the band (although he also plays rhythm guitar to this day). After these changes, Maroon 5 signed with Octone Records and released their debut album, "Songs About Jane", in June 2002. The album's lead single "Harder to Breathe", received heavy airplay, which helped the album to debut at number six on the Billboard 200 chart. The band won the Grammy Award for Best New Artist in 2005. For the next few years, the band toured extensively worldwide in support of Songs About Jane and produced two live recordings: 2004's "1.22.03.Acoustic" and 2005's "Live Friday the 13th". In 2006, Ryan Dusick officially left the band after suffering from serious wrist and shoulder injuries and was replaced by Matt Flynn. The band recorded their second album, "It Won't Be Soon Before Long" and released it in May 2007. The album reached number one on the US Billboard 200 chart and the lead single, "Makes Me Wonder", became the band's first number-one song on the Billboard Hot 100.
On September 21, 2010, the band released their third studio album entitled "Hands All Over". It was re-released in 2011 to include the single "Moves like Jagger" (featuring Christina Aguilera). While the original version of the album received mixed reviews, "Moves like Jagger" reached the number one position on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. The band released their next album, "Overexposed", on June 26, 2012. All four singles of the album were really successful on the charts - for example, the second single from Overexposed, "One More Night" (released on June 19, 2012), reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100. In 2014, the band signed with Interscope Records and released their fifth studio album, "V", with the very-first line-up of six official band members, as keyboardist and backing vocalist PJ Morton became an official member in 2012. The album debuted at top of the weekly Billboard 200 chart. Since its debut in 2002, the band has sold more than 15 million albums in the United States and over 100 million singles and 27 million albums worldwide.
Harder To Breathe
Maroon 5 Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
So condescending unnecessarily critical
I have the tendency of getting very physical
So watch your step 'cause if I do you'll need a miracle
You drain me dry and make me wonder why I'm even here
The double vision I was seeing is finally clear
You want to stay but you know very well I want you gone
When it gets cold outside and you got nobody to love
You'll understand what I mean when I say
There's no way we're gonna give up
And like a little girl cries in the face of a monster that lives in her dreams
Is there anyone out there 'cause it's getting harder and harder to breathe
Is there anyone out there 'cause it's getting harder and harder to breathe
What you are doing is screwing things up inside my head
You should know better you never listened to a word I said
Clutching your pillow and writhing in a naked sweat
Hoping somebody someday will do you like I did
When it gets cold outside and you got nobody to love
You'll understand what I mean when I say
There's no way we're gonna give up
And like a little girl cries in the face of a monster that lives in her dreams
Is there anyone out there 'cause it's getting harder and harder to breathe
Is there anyone out there 'cause it's getting harder and harder to breathe
Does it kill
Does it burn
Is it painful to learn
That it's me that has all the control
Does it thrill
Does it sting
When you feel what I bring
And you wish that you had me to hold
When it gets cold outside and you got nobody to love
You'll understand what I mean when I say
There's no way we're gonna give up
And like a little girl cries in the face of a monster that lives in her dreams
Is there anyone out there 'cause it's getting harder and harder to breathe
Is there anyone out there 'cause it's getting harder and harder to breathe
Is there anyone out there 'cause it's getting harder and harder to breathe
The lyrics of Maroon 5's song "Harder to Breathe" appear to be about a tumultuous relationship that has gone bad. The singer is frustrated with their partner's behavior and believes that they are unnecessarily critical and condescending towards him. He also admits to having a physical tendency but warns his partner to watch out because he could lash out at any point. The singer then goes on to describe the toll the relationship has taken on him by "draining him dry" and making him question why he is even still in it. He expresses a desire for his partner to leave and acknowledges the difficulty of the situation they are in.
The chorus of the song is a plea for understanding, as the singer compares their struggles in the relationship to a child's fear of a monster that haunts them in their dreams. The lyrics suggest that the singer is feeling suffocated and desperately needs air to breathe. The bridge of the song shifts the focus onto the partner, questioning whether they are aware of the harm they are causing and asking if they are feeling any pain themselves. The final chorus sees the singer once again reaching out for help and support, searching for someone to understand the difficulties they are facing.

Man, I miss this old sound. I know bands have to adapt and change, but this era of Maroon 5 really had something going for it.
@kayuanBM
Yeah, they actually played their instruments.
@rickthebaker9379
So true. Adam Lavigne on autotune grates my nerves. He has/had a nice voice.
@Ricardosilva-ns9fp
Triste mas é verdade.....
@rpggirl017
A little nostalgia is to blame. When a band is important when you're younger, it hits hard. So, when that band has to change, it's rough. Today, everything gets done with a heavy dose technology. Believe me, I feel it too.
