My parents divorced 5 years into their "marriage" (3 years after my birth) and despite that, my beloved father tried so hard to prove to my mom that he cared, and she never got that memo. Even after argument after argument, fight after fight, whenever she needed a roof, money, or something like that, he tried to care. And what did she do? Take advantage of him. Out of nothing more than misplaced retribution given that, growing up, she herself was exploited by all the men in her family, which still does not excuse making the last 25 years of my dad's life miserable. He passed away 4 1/2 years ago, and even now, she still will not own up. I've moved on, even after putting up with 21 of those years myself. Keep moving forward. Look in the right places and I'm sure you'll find good people. I know I have.

The way the story of “Be Kind” plays out is that Halsey is talking about a romantic interest. And the said individual has been in a tumultuous relationship(s) in the past, so he/she has issues in terms of opening up to her. Moreover he/she is depicted as the type who is emotionally-defensive, ready to snap every time he/she feels that they are offended. So basically, what Halsey is trying to tell them is that now he/she is in a romance with someone who truly cares for them. And that they doesn’t have to adopt the kind of mentality in which they are afraid to be vulnerable. Instead she presents herself as being “the one”, as in his romantic needs personified. And accordingly, she is entreating him/her to fully open their heart to her. So conclusively, it can be deemed that the person she is singing to is a sensitive individual. But with that being established, she wants him/her to know that she cares for him/her to the point that she will not exploit that vulnerability. And as for the titular statement, although it is never mentioned in the song, the way it would logically relate to the narrative is that she is imparting these words onto him/her. In other words, instead of getting violently emotional when he feels offended, she is telling them to rather “be kind”.
