Music so moving can change your entire perspective of things, like this song.
The memory still burns into my mind to this day.

I went to a simple dance party alone with lots of students, the purpose of me attending this school party was to meet a guy there, I guess you can say my platonic "date", we weren't together, I only knew this man for a few months. I remember wearing just a simple white dress and had my hair in big curls that landed down to my shoulders and wearing only one coat of mascara. I was waiting by the DJ and he decided to play some oldies. People were dancing and everyone was having a good time.

This song played as my "date" entered the school gym, I never noticed how handsome he was until that night. He was wearing a black biker jacket and levis jeans, his jawline was sharp and his cheeks were deeper than how I would usually see them. He had his hair slicked back and his bright smile lit the room with a dash of confidence in his step.

My heart JUMPED the moment Martha Reeves powerfully sang that first verse, he was greeting other people with that gorgeous smile while he was walking in... Then I realized as he was glancing left and right with those beautiful hazel eyes, he was trying to look for me.
My casual behavior disappeared, I was a nervous wreck. He was walking closer to my direction and I quickly ran into the bathroom across the gym with my face burning and my hands sweating. Looking at my reflection my arms and face were completely red. After I freshened up, I couldn't even speak right. I stepped out of the restroom and I immediately found him walking around and I just stood there mesmerized by his presence and looking at him for I don't know how long. When he finally saw me, I couldn't stop trembling. He licked his lips and smiled as he was cutting through the crowd not leaving his eyes from mine.
However in the end, we didn't end up together, I lost touch with him. But every time I listen to this song I think of that unforgettable night. Music is supposed to move you at a time of crisis or bliss. That is when you know the music is raw and real when it touches the right spot in your soul.

First time I heard this was riding my bike in West Philly with my buddy (we were only 10 years old). We got to the corner to turn around and come back down the street. I stopped and listened, he said come on, I said, NO, can't you hear that song? It was coming from a parked convertible1962 Pontiac Catalina, roof down, it was blasting, I got chills. I remember it vividly. WIBG AM in Philly played it and it shot up to #1 in less than 2 weeks. It was released July 9th 1963. Great song, the excitement it resonates. Awesome! What an exciting summer that was!

Most people don't realize how very ,VERY hard it is to get this level of upbeat happiness and joy onto a recording in a way people can feel it. It takes having all the elements in place . I was born in 1957. My parents was going through a Divorce at this time. When my mother would get mad with my father who was a baskett coach and P.E. Teacher At Ballard Hudson High School in Macon Bibb County Georgia, my mother would throw my little sister and I in the backseat of our farther's 1964 maroon Chevrolet 2 door super Sports Impala, and here we take Hwy 41 or 23 up to Atlanta Fulton County Georgia to stay a couple of days with my maternal grandmother until my maternal grandmother sent mother and my sister back to Macon to reconcile her marriage with our father. Mama would have this song blasting on the a.m car radio from Wibb in Macon, until we past through poor reception until We get near Atlanta to pick up WAOK. The car did not have air conditioning, so the wind from the widows and the song and the sound of tires on the road has forever locked this experience in my mind. My daddy was a 1957 Morehouse college graduate and he matched the color of his car to that of the maroon and white Of Morehouse colleges. Thanks for the post.

This is a great song. It was decades before my time, but I was raised on oldies and classic rock. That's what my mom and dad listened to, and as far back as I can remember I've loved that old music. There's just something about it.. it has a sound that's timeless, a sound that instantly makes you happy. Nothing the "musicians" of today make could ever compare it.

In the 60's I was so in love,with my first love Joyce Lott.I loved all of Motown and most of the record companies.There will never be music like this again.I want to thank you,for sharing this music.I grew up in North Philadelphia,right about two blocks from the Uptown Theater Broad & Dauphin St. All the acts came there from Motown etc.Becaused I love this music,my love for my first love will never die.

In my opinion, this is the *greatest* song ever to come out of Motown. It was released in August, 1963, during an actual heat wave across the country. The driving beat, great voices, energy, super piano work, and unbridled feeling make it the best song of its genre that I've ever heard.

So lucky to grow up during the 50s and 60s in Los Angeles where radio promoted terrific Motown and other great sounds.
So much variety, and we loved it all.

So, it's hard for me to imagine that Motown could have been "controversial" and not just universally loved. I can't imagine radio stations not lining up to play Motown.
No Motown, no Beatles.
