Spooky
Martha Reeves Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning | Line by Line Meaning
When everything is getting kind of groovy
You call me up and ask me
Would you like to go with you and see a movie
First I say no, I've got some plans for the night
And then I stop and say, alright
Love is kinda crazy with spooky little girl like me
You always keep me guessing
I never seem to know just what you are thinking
And if a girl looks at you
It's for sure your little eye will be a-winking
You get confuse, you never know where I stand and then I smile and hold your hand
Love is kinda crazy with spooky little girl like me
Spooky
If you decide someday stop a this little game that you are playing
I gonna tell you all things my heart's been a-dying to be saying
Just like a ghost, you've been a-hauting my dreams
But now I know, you're not what you seem
Love is kinda crazy with spooky little girl like me, spooky
The lyrics to Martha Reeves's song Spooky captures the feeling of uncertainty and ambiguity of a new romantic relationship. It begins with a cool evening and a proposition to go see a movie. The lyrics suggest that the narrator, who is a self-proclaimed "spooky little girl," is hesitant to accept, but eventually agrees. The second verse suggests that her love interest is enigmatic and keeps her guessing as he "always keep[s] [her] guessing" while never knowing what he's really thinking. He appears to be flirty with other women and ambiguous, but then turns around and holds her hand, making it hard to understand his intentions. The chorus seems to perfectly sum up the complex vibe of the relationship: "Love is kinda crazy with spooky little girl like me."
The third verse suggests that the narrator is struggling with the uncertainty of the relationship, where she feels as if she's being haunted by a ghost as he plays with her emotions. The final line reveals an unexpected twist, where she realizes that her love interest isn't what he seems, perhaps indicating that he was playing a game or hiding something from her all along. Overall, the lyrics of "Spooky" convey a sense of ambiguity and complexity in romantic relationships, where emotions and intentions can be difficult to understand and may lead to uncertainty and confusion.

First I say no, I 've got some plans for the night,
And then I stop, and say, "All right."
Love is kinda crazy with a spooky old lady like me
I always keep you guessing
You never seem to know what I am thinking
And if a fella looks at me
You can bet my little eye will be a-winking
You get so confused cause you don't know where I stand
Until I smile and hold your hand
Loving can be crazy with a spooky old lady like me
I'm spooky
Yeah, when I decided one day
To stop this little game that I was playing, yeah
Show me all the things
In your heart that you've been dying to be saying
Oh, I had been like a ghost
That had haunted your dreams
And you proposed to me on Halloween
Loving can be crazy with a spooky old lady like me
