As a baby boomer I jammed many a days off this song. As much as I love Heat Wave, Quicksand and others, this is my favorite. I only listen to 50s, 60s, and 70s. This was a wonderful era of "true music that could be understood!"

The beginning intro of this song reminds me of the mummers parade a great tradition usually in January in Philadelphia it has that sound of the banjoes which is played in the parade one of my favorite Martha and vandellas songs I love that intro of course great vocals

Released March 23, 1964 on Gordy 7031, just a week ahead of my 10th birthday and the fourth Vandellas side in a row I bought immediately ( I started young). HDH, Martha, and you and me will all die someday, but this kick-ass little gem never will. In the 60s, Berry Gordy carved out a musical Mt. Rushmore in Detroit, and it appears it will last as long as that stone one out in Rapid City SD.

Great old Mod record I remember in (64/65) in Bristol when we use to " Get Around" ....to Brighton (64/66), Margate(66), Bournemouth(65/68), Weston-Super-mare (64/65/66), Torquay(68/69) Discotheque's loved Tamla-Motown and so did the Mods .I cant believe how long ago this all happened, had quite a few " good" punch ups too, had my nose broken in Weymouth...well cant win em all lol. Still managed to pull a bird after i cleaned up, Bless-her she was a lovely kid. Great days 1

Yes she is. I DJ'ed alongside her on a Soul Cruise in November 2017 as a prequel to their UK Tour. The Vandellas are, and have been for a long time now, her sisters Delphine and Lois. 3 wonderful, down to earth ladies with none of the "diva" in them.

oh yea ! its motown memory time ! what a banging little tune from the early days, played it loads in "the last chance saloon" and "the scene" back in the early 60s this, "heatwave" and the fantastic, "quicksand" i always thought martha had a much better voice than her rival at hitsville "diana ross" she just didn't get the breaks that diana got, had the single back then on "stateside" here in the UK like so many others before tamla came along, many thanks for sharing, its a classic regards

Someone asked earlier if Martha is still performing. The answer: Yes, she does occasionally still perform at small venues around Michigan. Most recently, though, she had been a member of the Detroit City Council.

The Supremes also recorded this song with the same backing track, with additional strings and horns added later. "I'm Ready for Love" was originally intended for the Supremes, "Love Is Like An Itching In My Heart" for the Vandellas. In the end it was up to Quality Control to select what version to release but, believe me, the Supremes and the Vandellas could, and did, do excellent versions of the same songs. Ditto the Marvelettes, who also did some of the same songs.

This wasn't over looked by me and my crowd. Motown really did not give these superlative singers as much exposure as he did the Supremes who were my least favorites. I was a teen, l was there and none of us were rushing to the Supremes. Cross over did that. IJS.

this is The Funk Brothers at their best. Before their influence on Motown, the drum was on the down beat; 2 & 4. If you notice here we have a comancing 1-2-3-4 sometimes they would bank anything they could on the floor to introduce this new style of percussion.

I don't think there's any Adantes in this song for I can hear Rosiland and Betty in the background. The A's voices are a different sound. I love this song, so Motown and Martha does a great job on it.

Per various sources. Kenny Gamble and Jerry Ross did a song in the fall that same year called the 81 which sounds better than In my lonely room by Holland Dozier Holland, IMO.I was told Berry Gordy filed a lawsuit against Cameo/Parkway records. BTW, Holland Dozier Holland did not get writing credits for the 81 because Cameo/Parkway pulled the song before it became a hit. It sounds similar but the Motown song is darker sounding. If they'd changed or dropped the intro on the 81, there probably wouldn't have been much of a comparison for a lawsuit.

The Supremes version uses the same backing track with additional horns and other instrumentation. It was not unusual to record all four of its girl groups doing the same song against the same backing tracks, then selecting which to release. Many Motown artists said that when they would come off the road they would for the first time see a new album of theirs and could not even remember recording some of the songs. Albums until the later 1960s tended to be compiled from unreleased singles recorded over a broad span of years. This approach was part of Berry Gordy's genius of recording artists constantly and then selecting the best material for release.
