First off they had 2 and 4 track recorders in the 1960s. They had not yet discovered close micing of the drums yet. In fact, usually, including motown would record the music live one track. Sometimes, like the Beatles first album, the whole song was recorded live, vocals and all. Now, and since bands started playing in stadiums records are made by recording each sound, each componet of the drums, everything individually, isolated and mixed to simulate the sound of a stadium. I am glad that you share my taste for the old records.

A #1 hit for Martha and The Vandellas on the Rhythm & Blues charts. It was the 158th #1 R&B song of the Rock Era. It also hit #10 on the Top 40 charts. One of the greatest vocal groups of all time. Sad that they don't make music like this anymore.

I saw the Vandellas in local clubs, in Jersey and were always so good. This song was one of my favs and always loved to hear it on the radio. I always look for the oldies stations and there are fewer and fewer now. So sad what they play on top 40 now. The music died, but we can hear what the great music sounds like on youtube. I danced with this beautiful woman Martha Reeves on stage for a whole song while she played at the Alexander Palace in the 80's at a massive Christmas works do thrown by my company. I was so gobsmacked I still can't remember the song to this day but it was nice & slow. My work colleagues couldn't believe I would ask her.

I saw Martha and The Vandellas back in the day they brought the "House Down"..... They didn't have the glamour of the Supremes nor the "smoothness" of the Marveletts just "down home " FUNK and GRIT ....people were in the aisles dancing....... a very UNDERRATED GROUP !!!!!!!!!!!

I find myself coming back to this VID, again and again. It really has the "feel" of the time, such a great beat from a great group. Dancing In The Streets, Nowhere To Run, Heatwave ~ all just terrific songs from my youth. In 1967 my girlfriend and I danced an "accelerated" mash potato to Jimmy Mack and it was so much fun. I can honestly say that Martha Reeves & The Vandellas helped to make my 1960's youth (graduated H.S. in '65) the BEST! Thank you Martha, for all the great times! :)

When this song came out, I went with a boy whose name is Jimmy Mack. Actually James but was called Jimmy..I kid you not. My girls and I would sing it when he came around. This was my favorite Martha & The Vandellas' recording although Dancing In The Streets and Nowhere To Run weren't far behind. This song has just the absolute best beat to it and reminds me of 1967 (I was 20) when everything in my life was perfect and I needed nothing. Everyone should have a moment in their life when just waking up in the morning and looking forward to the day, their friends, their family, the music, the times and life itself ~ makes living worthwhile. I was 12 years old when this song was out and my girlfriend's uncle was a DJ/Sonny Hopson/Philly. Every time he played this song, right after they sang, "Jimmy Mack, when are you coming back," he would say, "I don't know." I am now 62 and every time I hear this song, I automatically say, "I don't know." It makes me think about my elementary school friend.
