Go Martha!!! Sounds like she dad theses tracks last night. Vocally, the natural beauty of her voice to me is more alive and soulfully pretty than any of the Motown Queens. She pulls you in and wears you out. Levi Stubbs does it from Motown's male stable.

A song like this make you think. These girls are singing a song that could be applied to abusive relationships to the present date. Martha and the Vandellas are delivering a brutal reality. Sing girls!!

The no-bullshit intro is almost menacing, then and now, and Martha's exasperation with whoever she's addressing -daughter or sister or friend- is palpable. This isn't just a singer, but an ACTRESS too. And she's a great one. This should have been a much bigger chart hit, but Vandellas fans never forget it anyway. The record's anger was perfect for the hot summertime of '65. Love you, Martha; I'm your prisoner for the rest of my life.

This group should have went more further than what it did. This group often played the fall girls to the Supremes who were of less talent and capability. Martha Reeves and the Vandellas were far more "naturally talented" than what the Supremes could have ever been. More time and money got devoted to the Supremes and less time and money went to Martha Reeves and the Vandellas.

@Four Seasons Not many remember that Annette was actually there before Betty. Annette threw away her career very quickly over a man but Betty was only too glad to be rushed into the recording studio to record Dancing in the Street as Annette had suddenly quit the Vandellas to be with her man.

this real top class vintage motown from the mid sixties, ahd martha is at her absolute best.i saw her at the winter gardens in 1971 or 1972 supported by her sister lois and sandra tilley, she finished with aquarious/ let the sunshine in and i still think about it, it was amazing.that was in bounemouth uk

Martha disbanded the group shortly after that performance at the Winter Garden as there was no money coming in anymore. After Martha dismissed Betty and Rosalind in the late 1960's the hits stopped coming, therefore the gigs were paying less...that is whatever gigs they could get by 1972. Martha felt that her career was over at that point.

maybe some DJs preferred the B side to this side but to me I always liked this although not a major hit I thought at the time that it might be, to me one of best from Martha and the Vandellas CLASSIC MOTOWN! by the way was Ivy Jo Hunter actually Ivory Joe Hunter? I guess probably not as Ivory Joe was not a MOTOWN writer or performer and older than most MOTOWN writers

Very MUCH agreed! Yes, this should have gotten more response than it did. I've been lead to believe that they are one in the same. A lot of the musicians they graced Motown's tracks were jazz artist. The Legendary Funk Brothers

The song might had been a bigger hit if those awful Andantes hadn't intruded their voices into the song to "smooth out" the vocals of Betty and Roz. Betty and Roz did not need any smoothing out. Betty and Roz had the Vandellas sound and the only thing the Andantes did here was dilute the Vandellas' sound. The Vandellas should have locked the Andantes out of the studio when they were recording much like David Ruffin would throw the Andantes out of the studio when the Temptations would be recording. And David Ruffin not only threw the Andantes out of the studio but he would double bolt the door to the studio and move a piece of furniture to secure the locked door so the Andantes would be sure stay out.
