Stranger In Paradise
Martin Denny Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Take my hand,
I'm a stranger in Paradise
All lost in a wonderland
A stranger in paradise
If I stand starry eyed,
That's a danger in Paradise
For mortals who stand beside
An angel like you
I saw your face,
And I ascended
Out of the common place
Into the rarest somewhere in space
I hang suspended
Until I know
There's a chance that you care
Won't you answer this fervent prayer?
Of a stranger in paradise
Don't send me in dark despair
From all that I hunger for
But open your angel's arms
To this stranger in paradise

And tell him that he need be
A stranger no more

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Martin Denny's "Stranger in Paradise" tell the story of a person who has found themselves lost in a wonderland, a stranger in paradise looking for someone to take their hand and guide them. When they see the object of their affection, they are completely awe-struck, and feel as though they have ascended into a rare space they never knew existed. The person is so enamoured with their crush, that they almost fear the intensity of their feelings, knowing that it could be dangerous for them. They pray to their crush to not leave them in dark despair but instead, to open their arms to this stranger so they need not feel like a stranger in paradise anymore.

The lyrics evoke the image of a person who has found their perfect match and is afraid of losing them. They are also aware of the dangers of falling in love, and are praying to their crush to reciprocate their feelings. At the same time, they are hopeful that their crush will take them in and make them feel at home, as they are strangers in paradise without them.
