Friends And Lovers
Martin George Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

What would you think if I told you
I've always wanted to hold you?
I don't know what we're afraid of
Nothing would change if we made love.

So I'll be your friend
And I'll be your lover
'Cause I know in our hearts we agree
We don't have to be one or the other
Oh, no, we could be both to each other.

Yes it's a chance that we're taking
And somebody's heart may be breaking
Oooh, but we can't stop what's inside us
Our love for each other will guide us.

So I'll be your friend
And I'll be your lover
'Cause I know in our hearts we agree
We don't have to be one or the other

I've been through you
You've been through me
Sometimes a friend is the hardest to see
And we always know when it's laid on the line
Nobody else is as easy to find

So I'll be your friend
(I'll be)
And I'll be your lover
Cause I'll be your friend
(I'll be)
And I'll be your lover
'Cause I know in our hearts we agree

We don't have to be one or the other
Oh, no, we could be both to each other.

Overall Meaning

The song Friends And Lovers, written by Jay Gruska and Paul Gordon and performed by Martin George, is a ballad that expresses the idea of friends becoming lovers. The lyrics suggest that the singer has always wanted to hold his friend, but they are both afraid of what might happen if they take their relationship to a romantic level. The chorus highlights the singer's willingness to be both a friend and a lover to his partner, and the belief that they can have both aspects in their relationship without having to choose between them. The lyrics use the metaphor of "laying it on the line" to express the fear and vulnerability of expressing romantic feelings to a close friend.

The second verse of the song reveals that the singer and his friend have been through each other emotionally, suggesting that they have already been supportive and intimate in a non-romantic way. The bridge of the song presents the idea that nobody else can understand them as well as they understand each other, making their relationship unique and worth preserving.

Overall, the lyrics of Friends And Lovers suggest a deep emotional connection between two people who are not sure what direction to take their relationship in. The song expresses the idea that love and friendship are not mutually exclusive, and that it is possible to be both a friend and a lover to someone.

I weep my face off every time i hear this, since my first listen in 1996, and it's funny that for some reason, as intimately as i 'know' this piece (sort of a musical photographic memory thing), this is the one song that every time i hear it I get it confused with stuff i composed as a kid, and i can't ever remember who/what it is at first. It just will 'show up' in my subconscious when i'm doing something else--walking, taking photos, whatever--and i've written music since i was a kid so that's often when my 'own' ideas hit me. But for some reason, this is the single piece of music that my brain can't separate out with an external label. The only other musician who's ever pulled that off so well for me is Paul Simon, and the two are stylistically nothing alike... apart from both being written by bad-ass hot dudes with great ears :)

This piece of music does stay with you. Glad you were moved to comment. Be good!

This links George to John Lennon. I went through a psychotic episode while listening to the album "In My Life" - Friends and Lovers still allows me to cry for John.
