In A Manner Of Speaking
Martin L. Gore Lyrics

I just want to say
That I could never forget the way
You told me everything
By saying nothing
In a manner of speaking
I don't understand
How love in silence becomes reprimand
Is beyond words
Oh give me the words
Give me the words
That tell me nothing
Oh give me the words
Give me the words
That tell me everything
In a manner of speaking
Semantics won't do
In this life that we live
We only make do
And the way that we feel
Might have to be sacrificed
So in a manner of speaking
I just want to say
That like you I should find a way
To tell you everything
By saying nothing
Oh give me the words
Give me the words
That tell me nothing
Oh give me the words
Give me the words
Give me the words
Give me the words
Give me the words
The lyrics of Martin L. Gore's song, In A Manner of Speaking, describe the difficulties of expressing one's feelings through words. The song tells the story of someone who is trying to communicate with a loved one but finds it difficult. The singer acknowledges that despite the fact that they can never forget the way their loved one told them everything, they did so by saying nothing. This paradoxical statement shows the singer's admiration for their loved one's ability to convey emotions through silence.
The singer goes on to describe their inability to understand how love in silence could turn into disapproval or blame. They express that the way they feel about their loved one is beyond words, indicating the depth of their emotions. The chorus of the song repeats the phrase "give me the words" as the singer searches for a way to communicate their emotions effectively. By saying that "semantics won't do" in the context of the feelings they are trying to express, the singer highlights the importance of context and tone, as opposed to just the words themselves.
The song concludes with the singer's desire to find a way to "tell you everything, by saying nothing." In this statement, the singer seems to acknowledge that actions can speak louder than words and that sometimes silence can be more important than what is said. In essence, In A Manner of Speaking is a song about the struggle to express complex emotions through language and a recognition that sometimes, words simply cannot do justice to the way we feel.

In a manner of speaking
I am about to tell you something important
I just want to say
I want to get this off my chest
That I could never forget the way
I will always remember how
You told me everything
You confided in me completely
By saying nothing
You communicated without words
I don't understand
I am confused about
How love in silence becomes reprimand
How our silence causes misunderstandings
But the way I feel about you
My feelings for you
Is beyond words
Cannot be expressed fully
Oh give me the words
I need to find the right words
That tell me nothing
To communicate without saying anything
Oh give me the words
I need to find the right words
That tell me everything
To communicate everything I feel
In a manner of speaking
The way I want to express myself
Semantics won't do
The words alone are not enough
In this life that we live
The reality of our existence
We only make do
We must make the best of what we have
And the way that we feel
Our emotions
Might have to be sacrificed
May have to be put aside
Give me the words
I need to find the right words
Give me the words
I need to find the right words
Give me the words
I need to find the right words
Give me the words
I need to find the right words
Give me the words
I need to find the right words

It's Written by Winston Tong but sometimes that is forgotten. I saw that Nouvelle Vague was credited for the creation of the song. Tuxeedomoon recorded that song in 1985. Winston Tong was one of the bands members...they are from San Francisco, California.

Apart from Prince, there is no other voice I love like Martin's. He is just adorable and I wish he would sing much more than he does.

I agree 💯 I can't stop listening to The Bottom Line from the album Ultra, my God his voice 😍❤️

This song, from the album Holy Wars By Tuxedo Moon (1985) was truly a small masterpiece in its original version, but Mr. Gore made it really wonderful. Martin simply loves music, and this is the key of his success. HIs way of performing anybody else's songs is the highest expression of his talent.
