Lopez was born in Sweden and later moved to Uruguay, then back to Sweden. When he was living in Uruguay, he played in a melodic black metal band called Requiem Aeternam with Martin Mendez, they can be heard on that band's first album Eternally Dying. He joined Opeth in 1998, after leaving the viking metal band Amon Amarth, with which he can be heard on the album Once Sent From the Golden Hall. With Opeth, he recorded the albums My Arms, Your Hearse, Still Life, Blackwater Park, Deliverance, Damnation and Ghost Reveries. His drumming on these albums showcase strong Latin influences, as well as some jazz influences. His versatility is shown when he deftly and quickly transitions from soft, melodic drumming to brutal, double pedal-powered death metal beats. One beat that can be found in many of Lopez's songs is a 6/8 clave, played on the ride and the snare, often over double pedal or the bass drum imitating the ride. According to the factsheet on Opeth's official website, Lopez currently endorses Premier drums and sticks, and Sabian cymbals.
A diagnosis of blood poisoning and a rare disease which he has are the most probable cause of Lopez's frequent problems (such as his panic attack on Opeth's "Lamentations" tour).
As of May 12th 2006, Martin Lopez has permanently left Opeth to be replaced by Martin Axenrot. Opeth frontman Mikael Åkerfeldt wishes the best for him, for Martin has assisted Opeth greatly throughout the years.

se fue metiendo en mi corazon
con mentiras y cariñitos
la fui queriendo con mucho amor
despacito muy despacito
crecia la llama de mi pasión
y sabiendo que no era buena
(coro)
y hoy que quiero dejarla de amar
no responden las fuerzas de mi alma
ya no se donde voy a acabar
pero yo ya no puedo olvidarla
despacito muy despacito
me dijo cosas que nunca ohi
me enseño lo que tantas veces
con otros labios no comprendi
pero todo todo se acaba
la dicha grande tambien se va
y nos deja nomas recuerdos
recuerdos de ella que no vendra
(coro)
y hoy que quiero dejarla de amar
no responden las fuerzas de mi alma
ya no se donde voy a acabar
pero yo ya no puedo olvidarlaaaaa
The song Despacito by Martin Lopez is a heart-wrenching ballad about the power and the pain of unrequited love. The lyrics speak of someone who slowly but surely fell in love with a woman who entered their heart with lies and sweet nothings. Despite realizing that the relationship was not good for them, they gave themselves fully and unconditionally to this love, and in doing so, their passion for her grew.
The chorus of the song addresses the struggle of trying to leave this love behind. The singer admits that the forces of their soul do not respond to their desire to let go, and they feel lost as they try to move forward. They know they cannot forget her, no matter how hard they try, and the pain of the situation is palpable in the lyrics.
The verse that follows speaks of the things that this woman taught the singer, things that they had never heard before. She showed them things that they had not understood before, and in doing so, she left a lasting impression on their heart. However, the verse also highlights the fleeting nature of happiness and joy, and how it all comes to an end eventually. The memories of the relationship remain, but the person is gone forever.
Overall, Despacito is a hauntingly beautiful song that captures the universal experience of loving and losing someone. The lyrics come from a place of deep emotion and speak to the heart of anyone who has ever loved and lost.

Slowly, very slowly
se fue metiendo en mi corazon
She crept into my heart
con mentiras y cariñitos
With lies and little affectionate gestures
la fui queriendo con mucho amor
I came to love her with a lot of love
crecia la llama de mi pasión
The flame of my passion grew
y sabiendo que no era buena
And knowing that she wasn't good for me
le di mi vida sin condición
I gave her my life unconditionally
(coro)
(Chorus)
y hoy que quiero dejarla de amar
And now that I want to stop loving her
no responden las fuerzas de mi alma
The forces of my soul don't respond
ya no se donde voy a acabar
I don't know where I'm going to end up
pero yo ya no puedo olvidarla
But I can't forget her
me dijo cosas que nunca ohi
She told me things I'd never heard before
me enseño lo que tantas veces
She taught me what I never understood
con otros labios no comprendi
With other lips, I didn't understand
pero todo todo se acaba
But everything, everything comes to an end
la dicha grande tambien se va
Great happiness also goes away
y nos deja nomas recuerdos
And leaves us only memories
recuerdos de ella que no vendra
Memories of her who won't come back
