Teenage Daughters
Martina McBride Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I ain't complainin'
But I'm tired, so I'm just sayin'
What I think
And if we're being honest
Then honestly I think I need a drink

My baby's growin' up
She thinks she's fallin' all in love
And that I hate her
At seventeen, she's just like me when I was seventeen
So I don't blame her

Do do do do
Do do do do
What are we gonna do?
Do do do do
Do do do do
What are we gonna do about it?

Remember when we use to be
Everything they ever need
We had them believing we were cool
It's like it happened over night
We're always wrong, they're always right
We use to be the one's breakin' the rules
Now we're just mothers, we're just fathers of
Teenage daughters

She rolls her eye's when I'm funny
But she's sweet when she wants money and her freedom
Oh my god, she's got a car
Swears they won't go far
And I wish I believed 'em

Do do do do
Do do do do
What are we gonna do?
Do do do do
Do do do do
What are we gonna do about it?

Remember when we use to be
Everything they ever need
We had them believing we were cool
It's like it happened over night
We're always wrong, they're always right
We use to be the one's breakin' the rules
Now we're just mothers, yeah, we're just fathers of
Teenage daughters

They're beautiful, wild and free
Everything we wish we could be
But they're still crazy
Oh you know, they make us crazy

Remember when we use to be
Everything they ever need
We had them believing we were cool
It's like it happened over night
We're always wrong, they're always right
We use to be the one's breakin' the rules
Now we're just mothers, and we're just fathers of
Teenage daughters

Yeah teenage daughters

I ain't complainin'
But I'm just tired, so I'm just sayin'
What I think

If we're being honest
Then honestly, I think I need a drink

Overall Meaning

Martina McBride's "Teenage Daughters" reflects the struggles, frustrations, and joys of raising teenage daughters. In the first verse, the singer confesses that she is tired and needs a drink, but she honestly thinks she needs a break from her daughter's growing pains. The mother notices that her teenage daughter is falling in love and often misunderstands her, thinking that she hates her. However, she understands that these are normal teenage issues, as she was once a seventeen-year-old girl.

The chorus highlights the change in dynamics in their relationship. The mother and father use to be everything their daughters needed and were considered cool. But now, the roles have reversed, and the parents are always in the wrong while their daughters are always right. The singer reflects on the beauty of her teenage daughters, who are wild, free, and everything they wish they could be.

The song resonates with the experiences of many parents raising teenage daughters. It acknowledges the difficulties of this stage in raising children but also celebrates the joy in watching them grow up. McBride's powerful vocals, combined with the relatable lyrics, make "Teenage Daughters" a timeless hit.

I'm a dad of the sweetest 6 year old girl and I play this song all the time. I've always wanted to share it with her mom but that's another story for another day. Great song if you got a daughter. It's so true

@HersheyChocolateChip

It was a blast seeing her in concert and she can be quite the entertainer... Especially this classic

@heronries

As the mom with (several) teenage daughters and fosterlings, I really like this song. My girls are creative, civil, sensible, loyal, brave, strong, and generous: real ladies. So proud of you! They are also popular, brilliant, beautiful, and talented. Where did THAT come from?!? You are amazing, ladies. It's an honour, pleasure and priviledge to be your Mom and watch you grow up.

@versansky75

She has one of the best voices in country music. Can't wait to hear more from Martina McBride

Another nail she hit right on the head!! I love Martina and all her music. This is something that both me and my 15 year old love, something that doesn't happen often between moms and daughters at her age..

I can relate to this. When I was little, my parents seemed perfect - they were everything I needed. When I began to grow up, I started noticing that they had flaws, just like every human being, and it became harder to relate to them. But we still manage to reconcile our differences and get along for the most part.

@miguelporraz

Have you realized your parents also loved you unconditionally and you’re far from perfect???

@1americanidol11

I LOVE this music video so much!(: I think it's so cool how they go down the differant decades, I especially love the 50s and 60s because that's the time period I wish I was growing up in!
