Following a falling-out of their professional and personal relationship in 1998, she began pursuing a solo career. It was not until 2003 that she released her debut album, Quixotic (Independiente Records), mainly produced by Martina and production team AMP9 (Alex McGowan, Steve Crittall, Nick Bird) at Space Eko Recording Studios London. Upon its release, it received rave reviews from critics and was a finalist for the 2003 Mercury Music Prize. The song "Sandpaper Kisses" from the album was featured in the video game, Fahrenheit (released in North America as Indigo Prophecy).
The album finally saw a release, of sorts, in the United States in July 2004 when the Palm Pictures label released a re-designed and re-sequenced version with a new title (Anything), a trimmed-down tracklisting and all-new cover art.
The following year she appeared on the Starbucks compilation album, Sweetheart 2005: Love Songs, which features contemporary musicians covering classic love songs. She sang "I Only Have Eyes for You", a song originally by The Flamingos.
Her second solo album, The Blue God, was released in May 2008. The track "Carnies" was released as the first single on 3 March 2008[3]and reached No.20 on the UK Indie Charts. "Poison" was released as the second single and reached No.9 on the Indie Charts.
Phoenix
Martina Topley Bird Lyrics

No one can last here,
Lucky for us dear,
Round and round we go.
Darling, the turn is resistance
Do you, I do
Forgettin’ to follow your instinct
I will stay for this last transformation,
From where we start it soon gets precarious,
I will stay for this last transformation,
Beauty and tragedy released in the end.
Here now we’re kneeling,
Now we’re revealing,
Purge every feeling,
As we turn to dust.
Don’t get yourself into mischief,
Do you, you don’t, do you,
Together whatever the distance,
To you, I'll come to you.
I will stay for this last transformation,
Flares in arcs will lead us out to sea,
Far above you the stars light the heavens,
Beauty and tragedy released in the end.
Out in the distance,
Blue god encrypted,
Phoenix persistent,
Round and round we go.
"Phoenix" by Martina Topley-Bird is a song that explores the idea of transformation through resistance and change. The lyrics describe a fast-paced world where everyone is struggling to keep up, but the singer considers herself lucky to be part of this intense experience. She urges her lover to follow their instincts and not get into mischief. She promises to stay by their side through the final transformation, which will be both beautiful and tragic.
As the song progresses, the singer emphasizes the importance of purging all feelings and revealing one's true self. She encourages her lover to remember that distance doesn't matter and that they will always be together. The vision of a phoenix rising from the ashes is invoked, symbolizing the idea of enduring and persevering through challenges. The final verse describes a distant blue god and a persistent phoenix, both of which circle round and round, suggesting that the cycle of transformation never truly ends.
