Marvin Pentz Gay, Jr. was born in 1939 to Marvin Gay, Sr. and Alberta Gay in Washington, D.C.. Gaye began his career in Motown in 1958, and soon became Motown's top solo male artist. He scored numerous hits during the 1960s, among them "Ain't That Peculiar", "Stubborn Kind of Fellow", and "How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved By You)", as well as several hit duets with Tammi Terrell, including "Ain't No Mountain High Enough"" and "You're All I Need to Get By", before moving on to his own form of musical self-expression.
Along with Stevie Wonder, Gaye is notable for fighting the hit-making—but creatively restrictive—Motown record-making process, in which performers, songwriters and record producers were generally kept in separate camps. Gaye forced Motown to release his 1971 album What's Going On, which is today hailed as one of the best albums of all time. Subsequent releases proved that Gaye, who had been a part-time songwriter for Motown artists during his early years with the label, could write and produce his own singles without having to rely on the Motown system. This achievement would pave the way for the successes of later self-sufficient singer-songwriter-producers in African American music, such as Luther Vandross and Babyface.
During the 1970s, Gaye would release several other notable albums, including Let's Get It On and I Want You, and released several successful singles such as "Come Get to This", "Got to Give It Up" and "Sexual Healing". By the time of his shooting death in 1984, at the hands of his clergyman father, Gaye had become one of the most influential artists of the soul music era.
Heaven Sent You I Know

Every night I said a prayer
Before I go to sleep (mhm)
Suddenly you were there
Your face so fine, your voice so sweet
In these arms of mine
I found you just in time
'Cause in this turn of the world
But then a miracle happened
Heaven must have sent you, I know
(Yes I know)
I know (yes I know)
Funny how my empty heart
Used to feel like a heavy load
Suddenly you were there
Like a friend on a lonesome road (yeah, yeah)
Right into these arms of mine
I found you, I found you just in time
'Cause I was a lonely man
Holding out my helpless hand
Then a miracle happened
Heaven must have sent you, I know
(Yes I know) Mmm, mmm
(Ooh-ooh, ooh-ooh)
Our time is here now
Now matter how the world is around
In your arms I find
Some kind of love and peace of mind
'Cause a miracle happened
Heaven must have sent you, I know
(Yes I know)
Ohh, ohh
Heaven must have sent you
Mhm, Kim, mmm
Ooh, ooh, hoo
Ohh, I (mhm)
The lyrics of Marvin Gaye's "Heaven Sent You I Know" is a song about finding love and companionship at a time of loneliness and desperation. In the song, the singer describes how he or she used to pray every night before going to sleep and then suddenly, the person they were praying for appears - a miraculous encounter. The person's presence alone brings immense joy as they describe their face as fine and their voice sweet. They talk about how they found each other just in time, as they were both lost and lonely. They acknowledge that it must have been heaven that sent them this person, as it's nothing short of a miracle.
The song speaks to the power of love to heal and bring joy when it seems that all else has failed. The singer describes how their heart used to feel like a heavy load, but suddenly their life is filled with love and happiness. This song is a tribute to the idea that sometimes when you ask the universe for something, you get lucky enough to receive it. The message of this song is one of gratitude and appreciation for the one who is heaven-sent.
