Marvin Pentz Gay, Jr. was born in 1939 to Marvin Gay, Sr. and Alberta Gay in Washington, D.C.. Gaye began his career in Motown in 1958, and soon became Motown's top solo male artist. He scored numerous hits during the 1960s, among them "Ain't That Peculiar", "Stubborn Kind of Fellow", and "How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved By You)", as well as several hit duets with Tammi Terrell, including "Ain't No Mountain High Enough"" and "You're All I Need to Get By", before moving on to his own form of musical self-expression.
Along with Stevie Wonder, Gaye is notable for fighting the hit-making—but creatively restrictive—Motown record-making process, in which performers, songwriters and record producers were generally kept in separate camps. Gaye forced Motown to release his 1971 album What's Going On, which is today hailed as one of the best albums of all time. Subsequent releases proved that Gaye, who had been a part-time songwriter for Motown artists during his early years with the label, could write and produce his own singles without having to rely on the Motown system. This achievement would pave the way for the successes of later self-sufficient singer-songwriter-producers in African American music, such as Luther Vandross and Babyface.
During the 1970s, Gaye would release several other notable albums, including Let's Get It On and I Want You, and released several successful singles such as "Come Get to This", "Got to Give It Up" and "Sexual Healing". By the time of his shooting death in 1984, at the hands of his clergyman father, Gaye had become one of the most influential artists of the soul music era.
One For My Baby
Marvin Gaye Lyrics

Darling, is so divine
Well, it sends an air of happiness
To my soul and my mind
I know the way your eyes caress me
The look of love on your face
Sends me to a new dimension
Well, it's love, it's love
It's not my imagination
How else can I explain the phenomenon?
Ooh, what sensation from this wonderful creation
Oh, babe, you're the music I hear
It's the sound of your voice
Darling, you're my rhapsody
My rhapsody, ooh, baby
Oh, the essence of your togetherness
Really, really turns me on
Even in a crowd of people
You and me can really be alone
Oh, baby, we're so together, darling
If you only knew
I'd give my life for you
Oh
Oh, baby
It's love, it's love
It's not my imagination
How else can I explain the phenomenon
Of sensation from this wonderful creation?
You're the music I hear
It's the sound of your voice
You're my rhapsody
If you only knew
I'd give my life for you
In this song, Marvin Gaye sings about the essence of love and how it affects him. He describes the beauty of the love shared between him and his significant other, emphasizing how powerful it is. The essence of their togetherness is divine and brings happiness to his soul and mind. He goes on to describe how her eyes caress him with love, and he goes to a new dimension and feels like he's spinning out in space. Gaye concludes that it's not his imagination, it's love, and he can't explain the phenomenon because it's so profound. He tells his lover that the sound of her voice is the music he hears and that she is his rhapsody, emphasizing how much she means to him.
The lyrics of the song express Gaye's passionate feelings about his lover, the way they connect and how they create a world of their own, even when they are in a crowd. It's a beautiful tribute to the transformative power of romantic love, and the way it can change an individual's life. The song is a manifestation of Gaye's appreciation for the power of companionship and the comfort, peace and joy that it can bring.
