Since I Had You
Marvin Gaye Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

This is a story (yeah)
About two lovers who shouldn't have been (yeah)
They did their thing (yeah)
Went their separate ways again (yeah)
Then by chance
They happen to meet at the neighborhood dance
And got that old feeling all over again
They said, "How much have you missed me since I had you?
How much?
How much?
I really wonder, girl
Wondered if you remember baby, how could you baby, too me darling
Such a thrill, but it's been so hard since I had you, baby
(Let's recall a thrill)
Oh sugar, come on, give me a break (let's recall a thrill)
'Cause it's been so hard, since I had you, baby (let's recall a thrill)
(Let's recall a thrill)

My eyes must look serious (since I met you)
'Cause when I look at you (body's soaking wet)
I get delirious, baby (ejaculate and sweat)
Your voice sounds so serious (since I met you)
But since we're still friends (you want to give me something?)
Let me make love to you again, baby (let's go home and come)

Don't make me wait
Been so hard
Since I had your sugar
Oh
Don't make me wait, been so hard
Since I had you, baby

Big Daddy Rucker is sho' nuff getting down
Ah now, this is a mellow dance
Ooh baby, ain't seen you in such a long time
Remember how I used to do this to you
Stroke on, baby, come on baby, let this be the last dance
(Ooh-ooh-ooh)

Since I had you, girl, I haven't wanted no other lover
Ooh-ooh
Since I had you, honey, there hasn't been no other lover
No other, baby
Since I had you, baby, there hasn't been no other woman, oh
Since I taste you loving, I haven't seen no other woman, oh I love you

Since I had you, baby, there hasn't been no other woman, you're mine now baby
You might not believe it, but since I had you there hasn't been no other woman, oh

What makes an album a classic masterpiece is not the โ€œhitโ€ records released by the studio. Itโ€™s the other songs produced on the album with no radio airplay. โ€œI Want Youโ€ is a masterpiece.

Agree. I was a teen when this came out but fast forward 2022 while listening to random music on my old school playlist this song came on. Now that I'm grown grown, It hits way different now โค๏ธ

The climax of this song is soooo good. Its the climax of the album in my opinion. Marvins vocal performance is on point... the string section is on fire...the horns are killing... the girl.. the bassline.. the groove..everything. It creates a mood that simply cant be put into words. Something like bliss
