Marvin Pentz Gay, Jr. was born in 1939 to Marvin Gay, Sr. and Alberta Gay in Washington, D.C.. Gaye began his career in Motown in 1958, and soon became Motown's top solo male artist. He scored numerous hits during the 1960s, among them "Ain't That Peculiar", "Stubborn Kind of Fellow", and "How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved By You)", as well as several hit duets with Tammi Terrell, including "Ain't No Mountain High Enough"" and "You're All I Need to Get By", before moving on to his own form of musical self-expression.
Along with Stevie Wonder, Gaye is notable for fighting the hit-making—but creatively restrictive—Motown record-making process, in which performers, songwriters and record producers were generally kept in separate camps. Gaye forced Motown to release his 1971 album What's Going On, which is today hailed as one of the best albums of all time. Subsequent releases proved that Gaye, who had been a part-time songwriter for Motown artists during his early years with the label, could write and produce his own singles without having to rely on the Motown system. This achievement would pave the way for the successes of later self-sufficient singer-songwriter-producers in African American music, such as Luther Vandross and Babyface.
During the 1970s, Gaye would release several other notable albums, including Let's Get It On and I Want You, and released several successful singles such as "Come Get to This", "Got to Give It Up" and "Sexual Healing". By the time of his shooting death in 1984, at the hands of his clergyman father, Gaye had become one of the most influential artists of the soul music era.

You're alone, all the time
Does it ever bother you? Have you asked why?
You seem, to fall in love, and out again
Do you really ever love? Or just pretend?
Oh baby, why fool yourself?
Don't be afraid, to help yourself
Stop, look, yes, listen to your heart
Hear what it's saying
Stop, look, listen to your heart
Hear what it's saying
Love, oh, love, love
Though you try, you can't hide
All the things you really feel, this time decide
That you, will open up, let it in
There's no shame in sharing love, you feel within
So jump right in
Head over heels, and fall right in
It's never too late, to late to
Stop, look, listen to your heart
Hear what it's saying
Stop, look, oh, listen to your heart
Hear what it's saying
Love, love, love
Ooo, hey
Darlin', darlin', stop and look
(Stop right now and listen to your heart)
Oh, listen to your heart hear what it's saying
(Can't you see that it's not too late)
Stop and look and listen to your heart hear what it's saying
Stop and listen to your heart right now
(Stop, look, listen to your heart hear what it's saying)
Oh, can't you see that it's not too late
(Stop, look, listen to your heart hear what it's saying)
Darlin' stop and look and listen to your heart hear what it's saying
(Stop baby)
Stop right now and listen to your heart
(And listen to your heart hear what it's saying)
The song "Stop Look Listen" by Marvin Gaye is a touching plea for introspection and honest self-reflection in the context of love and relationships. The opening lines set the contemplative tone, asking the listener if being alone all the time bothers them and if they have ever wondered why. This sentiment is explored further as the lyrics question whether the listener truly falls in love or simply pretends. The chorus, "Stop, look, listen to your heart, hear what it's saying," highlights the importance of listening to one's own inner voice and not being afraid to explore one's emotions.
The second verse of the song continues this theme, with the lyrics urging the listener to stop hiding their true feelings and to open themselves up to love. The repetition of the phrase "Stop and look and listen to your heart" reinforces the importance of honest self-assessment and taking the time to truly understand one's own thoughts and emotions.
Overall, "Stop Look Listen" is a powerful song that encourages introspection, self-love, and vulnerability in the context of relationships. Its message is a timeless one that still resonates with listeners today.
