Marvin Pentz Gay, Jr. was born in 1939 to Marvin Gay, Sr. and Alberta Gay in Washington, D.C.. Gaye began his career in Motown in 1958, and soon became Motown's top solo male artist. He scored numerous hits during the 1960s, among them "Ain't That Peculiar", "Stubborn Kind of Fellow", and "How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved By You)", as well as several hit duets with Tammi Terrell, including "Ain't No Mountain High Enough"" and "You're All I Need to Get By", before moving on to his own form of musical self-expression.
Along with Stevie Wonder, Gaye is notable for fighting the hit-making—but creatively restrictive—Motown record-making process, in which performers, songwriters and record producers were generally kept in separate camps. Gaye forced Motown to release his 1971 album What's Going On, which is today hailed as one of the best albums of all time. Subsequent releases proved that Gaye, who had been a part-time songwriter for Motown artists during his early years with the label, could write and produce his own singles without having to rely on the Motown system. This achievement would pave the way for the successes of later self-sufficient singer-songwriter-producers in African American music, such as Luther Vandross and Babyface.
During the 1970s, Gaye would release several other notable albums, including Let's Get It On and I Want You, and released several successful singles such as "Come Get to This", "Got to Give It Up" and "Sexual Healing". By the time of his shooting death in 1984, at the hands of his clergyman father, Gaye had become one of the most influential artists of the soul music era.
You've Changed

The things have really changed between us
You've changed
That sparkle in your eyes is gone
Your smile is just a careless yawn
It's all over now, you've changed
Your kisses now are so blase
You're bored with me in every way
You're breaking my heart you've changed
You've forgotten the words I love you
Each memory that we've shared
You ignore every star above you
I can't realize that you ever cared
You've changed
You're not the angels I once knew
No need to tell me that we're through
It's all over now, you've changed
You've forgotten the words I love you
Each memory that we've shared
You ignore every star above you
I can't realize you ever cared
You've changed
That sparkle in your eyes is gone
Your smile is just a careless yawn
It's all over now, you've changed
Yes it's over now, you've changed
(Now it's over, you've changed)
It's over baby
In Marvin Gaye's song 'You've Changed', the singer is addressing a former lover, stating that things have changed between them. He speaks directly to his ex-partner and outlines the ways in which they have changed, which has resulted in their relationship being over. The song conveys themes of heartbreak, disappointment, and the end of a once loving relationship. The lyrics describe a once bright and warm relationship turning cold and empty. The lines "That sparkle in your eyes is gone, Your smile is just a careless yawn" depict how the affection and passion they once shared has dissipated, and the relationship is now dull and lifeless.
The singer is hurt and feels neglected, as the words "You're bored with me in every way, You're breaking my heart you've changed" demonstrate. The song describes how the lover has forgotten the words "I love you" and has become disinterested in their memories and experiences. The singer, therefore, cannot comprehend if their lover ever truly cared for them. Overall, the song explores how change can bring an end to a once promising relationship.
