Close the Door
Mary Beth Peil Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

These strangers
Come calling
Soon enough theyβ€²re gone
The twilight
Is falling
Lamps will soon go on

And where does summer go?
I will never know
Summer used to last endlessly
Children all in white
Running down the sand
To me...
To me...

These strangers
Sent packing
What do they expect?
So grasping
So lacking
Why not be direct?

The beating of my heart
After they depart
Lying wide awake
Through the night
Will you ever come
Running home to me?
You might...
You might...

I've believed so long
I have dared to hope
That the door might open
And that you might enter

Playing hide and seek
Kisses on my cheek

The lamps begin to glow
In my heart, I know
Youβ€²re a lie that I've waited for
Tell them all to go

Tell them all - no more!
Tell them I close the door

Overall Meaning

In "Close the Door," Mary Beth Peil sings about the passing of time and how it impacts her relationships with others. The first verse speaks of the fleeting nature of strangers who come and go from our lives, and how quickly the day turns into night. She then laments about the passing of summers and how they used to last forever when she was a child, but now seem to fly by without notice. The chorus shifts to a deeper personal longing for a loved one to return home to her, as she lies awake at night with the beating of her heart.

The second verse addresses the frustrations she feels with those who come into her life and then leave just as quickly, without any genuine connection or sincerity. She longs for directness and honesty in all her relationships. The bridge speaks of her hope and belief that someone special will come into her life and complete her, playing hide and seek, giving her kisses on the cheek, and opening doors to a life full of love and companionship. However, in the end, she realizes that this person is just a lie she has been waiting for and must close the door on any other distractions or false hopes.

Overall, "Close the Door" is a hauntingly beautiful ballad about the passage of time and the fleeting nature of relationships. It speaks to our desires for deep and meaningful connections with others, and the pain we feel when those connections are lost or never materialize.

I saw the Dutch version last Thursday, and like, half way through this song the youngest Anastasia slowly walked over, as like a ghost. It truly shows how the empress feels haunted by her desire to have her grandchild back. When she decides enough is enough the little Anastasia slowly walks away, as to truly emphasize her pain.

I saw it 4 times on Broadway. That song truly gets the audience bawling. Truly the most haunting song ever in the show.

Natalie Harshman

Wow, that's cool!

"Summer used to last endlessly." this sentence captures the essence of this beautiful song

Julie Shez

The poor grandmother's heart can't take it anymore of those girls claimed to be Anastasia

so she grows cold and bitterly alone without believing a fairy tale.

Julie Shez

as a scared stone-hearted elderly woman

closed tightly that she can't feel anymore

for it's not alright with her either in a fine way.

From this song i feel sorry for dowager empress, she lives the rest of her life trying to believe her granddaughter's survivor, and never gives up finding her, however all "Anastasia" that turn up are nothing but imposters. She is deceived by others many of times, and she refuses to see anyone and decides to live in mourning all alone...(story plot, not really related to history) this song is just so bitter and nearly brings me to tears

AnimeFan90

BUT THANKFULLY, SHE FINALLY REUNITED WITH HER SOLE SURVIVING GRANDAUGHTER AT THE END THANKS TO DIMITRI WHO HAD A CHANGE OF HEART AND TOOK A LEVEL IN KINDNESS!!

@Xinyi Sally Peng Remember excuse me just a reminder that Anastasia , her parents and her sisters and brother both murdered in the same time long ago.

so yeah this a real-life tragic fairy tale for the family of the Romanov dynasty.

Natalie Harshman

@Grace Me too; first I read a book when I was younger that involved the whole Romanov story, then it led to the movie (and like a whole obsession) and then the musical! I'm always learning more about them though.
