Black was born into a musical family. Her father had been a fiddler, her mother a singer, and her brothers have their own group. She sang in her family's group in her youth.
In 1975 Black joined a small folk band called General Humbert, with whom she toured Europe and released two albums, in 1975 and 1978. In 1982 she developed a professional relationship with musician/producer Declan Sinnott and recorded her first solo album, Mary Black.
She went on to play in other groups including the traditional Irish band De Dannan from 1984-1986. After 1986 she had a successful solo career where she went on to try contemporary styles ranging from jazz to country. She was named "Best Female Artist" in the IRMA poll in 1987, 1988, 1992, 1994 and 1996.
She is married to Joe O'Reilly of Dara Records and they have three children. Her son Danny is a member of the Irish rock band The Coronas, while her daughter Róisín is performing under the name Róisín O.
For a number of years, "What Hi-Fi?" magazine considered Black's voice to be so pure that it was used as an audiophile benchmark for comparing the sound quality of different high fidelity systems.

Mary Black Lyrics

And just like a water baby, baby born to float
And if life is a wild wind that blows way on high
And your heart is Amelia dying to fly
Heaven knows no frontiers
And I've seen heaven in your eyes
And if life is a bar room in which we must wait
Where we sing until dawn of our fears and our fates
And we stack all the deadmen in self addressed crates
In your eyes faint as the singing of a lark
That somehow this black night
Feels warmer for the spark
Warmer for the spark
To hold us 'til the day
When fear will lose its grip
And heaven has its way
Heaven knows no frontiers
And I've seen heaven in your eyes
If your life is a rough bed of brambles and nails
And your spirit's a slave to man's whips and man's jails
Where you thirst and you hunger for justice and right
Then your heart is a pure flame of man's constant night
In your eyes faint as the singing of a lark
That somehow this black night
Feels warmer for the spark
Warmer for the spark
To hold us 'til the day when fear will lose its grip
And heaven has its way
And heaven has its way
When all will harmonise
And know it's in our hearts
The dream will realise
Heaven knows no frontiers
And I've seen heaven in your eyes
Heaven knows no frontiers
And I've seen heaven in your eyes
Jimmy McCarthy
The song "No Frontiers" by Mary Black is a beautiful ballad that talks about the highs and lows of life and the power of love. The lyrics begin with the metaphor of life being like a river and the heart like a boat, indicating that just like a boat floats on water, human beings are born to navigate through life's challenges. The next metaphor compares life to a wild wind that blows high, and the heart to Amelia Earhart- the first female aviator to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean. These comparisons set the tone for the rest of the song where the idea of heaven, fear, and love is explored.
The chorus of the song repeats the phrase "Heaven knows no frontiers, and I've seen heaven in your eyes," implying that love has no boundaries or limitations, and the person the song is directed towards is the embodiment of heaven. The following verses use the imagery of a barroom where people wait for someone to come and take them away, and a rough bed of brambles and nails that represent the struggles of life faced by those who fight for justice and right. However, the spark of love in the person's eyes is what keeps the singer of the song going, holding them until the day when fear will lose its grip, and heaven will have its way.
Overall, "No Frontiers" is a song that encourages people to keep going even in the darkest times of life, as love can offer a glimmer of hope and make all the difference. The lyrics are thought-provoking, and the beautiful voice of Mary Black adds to the overall emotional experience of the song.
