One of her most widely known singles is "Passionate Kisses" (written by fellow singer-songwriter Lucinda Williams), a song with a rock flavor musically and lyrics listing simple desires such as "a comfortable bed", "food to fill me up", and "time to think". Another big hit was "Down at the Twist and Shout", which she performed in January 1997 at Super Bowl XXXI in New Orleans.
A number of Mary Chapin Carpenter's songs speak to women, urging them on through hard times or troubled relationships. In "He Thinks He'll Keep Her", co-composed by Carpenter and Don Schlitz, the singer makes the case for strength and self-respect. Another common theme in her music is that of taking life at your own pace, rather than rampant goal-driven materialism, such as "The Long Way Home" from her 2001 album Time*Sex*Love, which pokes fun at a man who "retire(s) at thirty to his big-ass house next to the putting green." The album has a relatively different feel musically, incorporating elaborate orchestra melodies, but with her characteristic lyrical depth.
Her album Between Here and Gone, was released in 2004.
Carpenter's 2007 album, The Calling, on Rounder Records' rock/pop imprint Zoë, features commentary about contemporary politics, a reaction to the impact of Hurricane Katrina on a track entitled "Houston," and an incendiary track entitled "On with the Song", dedicated to the Dixie Chicks, and addressing the visceral reaction to the trio. In less than three months after its release, The Calling sold more than 100,000 copies in the US.
Carpenter has won five Grammy Awards and is the only artist to have won four consecutive Grammy Awards for Best Female Country Vocal Performance, which she received from 1992 to 1995. On October 7, 2012, Carpenter was inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame.
Carpenter is a fifth cousin of the late singer and humanitarian Harry Chapin, along with his brothers Tom Chapin and Steve Chapin.

I want a comfortable bed that won't hurt my back
Food to fill me up
And warm clothes and all that stuff
Shouldn't I have this?
Shouldn't I have this?
Shouldn't I have all of this, and
Passionate kisses, whoa-oh-oh
Passionate kisses from you?
Is it too much to demand
I want a full house and a rock-'n'-roll band
Pens that won't run out of ink
And cool quiet and time to think
Shouldn't I have this?
Shouldn't I have this?
Shouldn't I have all of this, and
Passionate kisses
Passionate kisses, whoa-oh-oh
Passionate kisses from you?
Do I want too much?
Am I going overboard to want that touch?
I shout it out to the night
Give me what I deserve 'cause it's my right
Shouldn't I have this? (shouldn't I?)
Shouldn't I have this? (shouldn't I?)
Shouldn't I have all of this, and
Passionate kisses
Passionate kisses, whoa-oh-oh
Passionate kisses from you?
Passionate kisses
Passionate kisses, whoa-oh-oh
Passionate kisses from you?
Passionate kisses
Passionate kisses from you?
Passionate kisses

The lyrics of Mary Chapin Carpenter's song Passionate Kisses reflect the desires of a woman who wants the simple things in life: a comfortable bed, good food, warm clothes, and a few pens that write well. The singer of the song is puzzled why these simple things are denied to her despite her asking for them. She then asks if she is asking for too much, and if she deserves to have just a passionate kiss from the man she loves. The woman is confident about her right to have what she desires, but is also wary of being seen as demanding and greedy.
The song's chorus echoes the singer's strong desire for passionate kisses from her lover. These kisses seem to symbolize a deeper and fulfilling relationship, the one where she is loved for who she is, not what she has or owns. The woman's longing for passion and a deeper connection is palpable and relatable. The simple melody and the repetitive lyrics of the song enhance the emotional intensity of the song.
Overall, "Passionate Kisses" is a song that highlights the need for human connection and the desires of a woman who seeks emotional intimacy, simple pleasures of life, and fulfilling relationships.

I love this song. It takes me back when me and my sweetheart were just married and when it came on the radio she would turn it up and bounce across the room, grab me and kiss me while dancing me around. It's a beautiful memory of my baby and i thank Mary for this song. Thanks Mary, thank you so much. It means a lot to me. David

I see scenes in movies where the man or woman says "they are playing our song". Is it officially "your song" as a couple?
Anna Vaughan
I agree. Country music touches my heart like any other kind of music .✌
René Jensen
Actually I believe it would be more fair to thank Lucinda Williams who wrote the song 🙂

Mary Chapin Carpenter is a great singer and composer. And great artists are in general very difficult to classify under a style. She rocks, she folks, she countries, she souls. What a great lady with personality. I love her music and specially her interpretation and her "don't care attitude" for the establishment. She is unique. She is out of this world. Long Live MCC.

Related to Harry Chapin ? Sorry I don't know much about her and that kind of music ?
Sebastiao Pereira-Nunes
@DaleRC75 I respect your opinion. But you see, I heard MCC version before hearing Lucinda’s one and from there I may have gotten this bias. Anyway, today I love both of them! Great artists!

@Jeffccan MCC- Has always been more folk than country. But Country is for the most part a Southwestern vernacular form of Pop and Rock Music. It seemed to catch fire about the same time as Rock and most of Rock's original artists had 1 foot in both Genres. Hank Williams died the same year Bill Haley recorded Rock around the clock. 1953.Regardless I think something went wrong in Country around the mid 2000's and I'm not sure why. It's happened before and usually a new style of country blows the BS stuff out of the way when it no longer seems fresh. In 1981 Country seemed close to dead even if it sold records. By the late 80's new artists came in and I don't hear much Countrypolitan these days.
