Whispering
Mary Ford Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Don't worry I'm not looking at you
Gorgeous and dressed in blue
Don't worry I'm not looking at you
Gorgeous and dressed in blue
I know it drives you crazy
When I pretend you don't exist
When I'd like to lean in close
And run my hands against your lips
Though we haven't even spoken
Still I sense there's a rapport
So whisper me your number
I'll call you up at home
Whisper me your number
I'll call you up at home
Don't worry I'm not looking at you
Don't worry I'm not looking at you
Gorgeous and dressed in blue
Don't worry I'm not looking at you
I know you see me see you
As you see me walk on past
When there's nothing more I'd like to do
Then come in close and hear you laugh
Though we haven't even spoken
Still I sense there's a rapport
So whisper me your number
I'll call you up at home
Yea whisper me your number
I'll call you up at home
Whisper me your number
I'll call you up at home

Hmm whisper me your number
I'll call you up at home

Overall Meaning

The song "Whispering" by Mary Ford is a love song about two people who are drawn to each other but are hesitant to make the first move. The singer begins by acknowledging the person she is interested in, but also trying to play it cool by saying she is not looking directly at them. She describes the person as gorgeous and dressed in blue, indicating that she has taken notice of their appearance. The singer then reveals that she likes to pretend the person doesn't exist to avoid showing her true feelings, but deep down she wants to be close to them.

Despite the fact that the two haven't even spoken, the singer feels there is a certain rapport between them, and she wants to take the first step by asking for their number. She promises to call the person at home if they whisper their number to her. This shows that the singer is willing to take a risk and make a move, but she is still being cautious by wanting the person to initiate the interaction.

The lyrics of this song evoke a sense of yearning and romantic tension, capturing the feeling of being attracted to someone but not knowing how to approach them. The singer's voice is soft and seductive, creating an intimate atmosphere that draws the listener into the story of the song.

TOO FRIGGIN COOOOOOOOL. Les was so far ahead of his time. He presented a paper in the early fifties to the society of recording engineers and described a medium of recording, in the future, that would use light and non-contact . Can you say CD??. What a genius. I met and spoke to him in 2003 and he was clearly a 25 year old kid in an 80's somrthing body. What a gem he was.

This MUSIC takes me back to when music was MUSIC! Les Paul and Mary Ford were two of my favorites! When I listen to them here, I'm totally nostalgic!!

Music would not have gotten past Rosemary Clooney and Guy Lombardo without Les Paul's genius.
