Speak Low
Mary Martin & Kenny Baker Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Speak low when you speak,
Our summer day withers away too soon, too soon
Speak low when you speak, love
Our moment is swift, like ships adrift, we're swept apart, too soon
Speak low, darling, speak low
Love is a spark, lost in the dark too soon, too soon
I feel wherever I go that tomorrow is near, tomorrow is here and always too soon
Time is so old and love so brief
Love is pure gold and time a thief
We're late, darling, we're late
The curtain descends, ev'rything ends too soon, too soon
I wait, darling, I wait
Will you speak low to me, and love and soon

Overall Meaning

The song "Speak Low" by Mary Martin Kenny Baker speaks about the fleeting nature of love and time. The lyrics implore the listener to speak low when they speak about love, as the moment is swift, and endings come too soon. The lyrics suggest that the singer feels the constant presence of tomorrow and the inevitability of endings. The tone is melancholic, and there is a sense of urgency to the request to speak low and love soon.

The lyrics highlight the theme of the fleeting nature of love and life. The phrases, "our summer day withers away too soon," and "our moment is swift, like ships adrift" convey how moments of happiness are quick to pass. The song juxtaposes the concept of time and love, with time seen as old and love as pure gold, but time is the thief. The lyrics illustrate how time can steal precious moments and love, and everything ends too soon. The singer waits for their beloved to speak low and love soon, but the curtains descend, and everything ends too soon.

Hi RAFfc!
So good to hear from you! Wish I'd seen this show since I'm a big-time Mary Martin fan. I hope these 2 that follow will work. Neither are videos, and only the 1st one comes from "One Touch..."
The second one is also Ms. M, but I've read the show was a flop; rare for a Mary Martin show! Either way this song is a winner. Hope you like, and hope they work! My best wishes accompany this message!

Habla bajo cuando hables, amor
Speak low when you speak, love

Nuestro día de verano se marchita demasiado pronto, demasiado pronto
Our summer day withers away too soon, too soon

Habla bajo cuando hables, amor
Speak low when you speak, love

Nuestro momento es rápido, como barcos a la deriva, somos barridos demasiado pronto
Our moment is swift, like ships adrift, we´re swept apart, too soon

Habla bajo, cariño, habla bajo
Speak low, darling, speak low

El amor es una chispa, perdido en la oscuridad demasiado pronto, demasiado pronto
Love is a spark, lost in the dark too soon, too soon

Siento donde quiera que vaya que mañana es
I feel wherever I go that tomorrow is

Cerca, el mañana está aquí y siempre es demasiado pronto
Near, tomorrow is here and always too soon
El tiempo es tan viejo y el amor tan breve
Time is so old and love so brief

El amor es oro puro y el tiempo un ladrón
Love is pure gold and time a thief

Llegamos tarde, cariño, llegamos tarde
We´re late, darling, we´re late

El telón desciende, todo termina demasiado pronto, demasiado pronto
The curtain descends, everything ends too soon, too soon

Espero, cariño, espero
I wait, darling, I wait
Me hablarás en voz baja, me hablarás de amor y pronto
Will you speak low to me, speak love to me and soon

Thanks for the chance to hear the song as originally performed (to bite sized bits), and to float away on the duet harmonies from Mr. Baker. It really is a dance of seduction, not a flat-out ballad. And the gallery of Mary pix is another delight.

Hollywood's two most under-rated singers, Mary Martin and Kenny Baker, what a blend !

Bronxboy47

A gem from a legendary era of Broadway musicals.

Richard Lee

Mary Martin at her most vocally sublime in this number. Nobody ever sang it better.

Your comment is so welcome! Also, wish I'd seen this show! Old as I am, even that would be impossible! I loved both Mary Martin and Kenny Baker. At 9 years of age I marveled at watching her fly over much of the theater in "Peter Pan!" I saw her "twice!" Still feel blessed! Thanks so much for writing.

Thanks for posting this! I saw Mary Martin in "Peter Pan" at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles in October, 1954, when I was six years old. It remains the most thrilling live stage show I've ever seen, in only the way that a six year old can be enchanted when her favorite story comes to life. Cyril Ritchard was Captain Hook, Margalo Gilmore was Mrs. Darling, Kathy Nolan was Wendy, and Mary's daughter, Heller, was Liza the maid. No, this musical hasn't aged well, but never mind that. When Mary came down to the edge of that stage and asked us to clap if we believed in fairies and save Tinkerbell's life, to say there was pandemonium in the audience would be an understatement. I dashed backstage to get her autograph, but Richard Halliday barred the way: "Sorry kids, she's got another show to do tonight and she needs to rest." What a jerk! Cyril Ritchard, however, chatted with us while removing his makeup. You'd never know that having his dressing room overrun with young children wasn't his favorite thing in the world. Years later, on a TV talk show, he said meeting all the kids was one of the highlights of his career. Mary's Peter Pan costume is on display at the Museum of the City of New York in Manhattan.

One of the most phenominal performers of all time. I just adore Mary Martin. Thank you for posting this.

Mary Martin, who was in her heyday when I was still a child, was known for being bright, upbeat, sparkling, funny and enlivening, but I realized she was much more than that. Though definitely a comic genius she also projectec also a wistful tenderness and rare sensitivity that could break your heart. Who could miss this in the way she sang "Once Upon A Time and Long Ago" as Peter Pan, or the opening of The Sound of Music? And she did Born Yesterday on TV. Her Billie Dawn was deeply affecting.
