Beauty and the Beast
Mary Millar Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

MRS POTTS

Tale as old as time
True as it can be
Barely even friends
Then somebody bends
Unexpectedly
Just a little change
Small to say the least
Both a little scared
Neither one prepared
Beauty and the Beast

BELLE

Dance with me?

BEAST

No, I...

LUMIERE & COGSWORTH

Dance with her!

MRS POTTS

Ever just the same
Ever a surprise
Ever as before
And ever just as sure
As the sun will rise

Tale as old as time
Tune as old as song
Bittersweet and strange
Finding you can change
Learning you were wrong

Certain as the sun
Rising in the east
Tale as old as time
Song as old as rhyme
Beauty and the Beast

Tale as old as time

Song as old as rhyme
Beauty and the Beast

Overall Meaning

The song "Beauty and the Beast" is a classic love story that talks about the main characters of the famous fairy tale. The opening lines of the song, sung by Mrs. Potts, set up the story's fundamental premise. The tale is as old as time, meaning it has been around for generations and generations. The lyrics also emphasize the fact that this is a story that captures the truth of human interactions; that is, how true love can arise from something small and unexpected.

Belle implores the Beast to dance with her, which he initially declines. However, the other characters, Lumiere and Cogsworth, urge him to dance with her, leading to the iconic ballroom scene in the Disney movie. The lyrics describe that the main characters were unsure and unprepared, which conveys the idea that the relationship between them was an unexpected and sudden change.

Furthermore, the song emphasizes the theme of transformation and acceptance, as Belle learns to look beyond the Beast's exterior and see the beauty within. The lines "finding you can change, learning you were wrong" signify this transformative power of love.

Overall, the song tells the story of a transformative and unexpected love story that proves the power of true love.

I don't think I heard he'd died. I met him and others at Mary's memorial service (the Actors' Church).

She still looked good (and acted well) as Rose.

I hope we find more examples of her lovely singing voice.

She was on an l. p. of excerpts from "Bless the Bride" with Peggy Mount.

I remember her in rewritten versions of Gilbert and Sullivan (Yum-Yum, and Phyllis as a photographer's model).

Also singing "Baubles, Bangles and Beads" carried by some men!
