Performed by The Mash
Through early morning fog I see
Vision's of the things to be
The pains that are with held for me
I realize and I can see
That suicide is painless
And I can take or leave it if I please
The game of life is hard to play
Gonna to lose it anyway
The losing card I'll someday lay
So this is all I have to say
That suicide is painless
It brings on many changes
And I can take or leave it if I please
The song "Suicide Is Painless" by Mash! is a rather haunting depiction of the futility of life and the idea of suicide. The opening lyrics seem to convey a sense of disillusionment with the future - the singer is seeing visions of things to come, yet it's clear that these visions are not hopeful or cheerful. The pains that are withheld from the singer - perhaps the pains of life, of heartbreak, or of existence itself - are palpable, and it's clear that the singer is grappling with his or her own mortality.
The singer then goes on to discuss the idea of suicide, and how it can bring on many changes. There's a certain sense of fatalism in these words - the singer seems to suggest that death is inevitable anyway, so why not simply choose to end one's own life? And yet, the singer is also acknowledging that suicide is a choice - "I can take it or leave it if I please" - and that this decision is not one to be taken lightly.
All in all, "Suicide Is Painless" is a thought-provoking (albeit somewhat unsettling) song about the darker aspects of human existence. The lyrics convey a sense of despair, yet there is also a certain clarity and honesty in their words that make this song an enduring classic.

I stayed up and watched it.
No lie, I think that's why I didn't enlist after graduation in 2002. That recruiter couldn't lie to me after watching this show. I didn't want to end up subservient to some Major Burns for 4 years.

I remember my dad watching MASH at night. I would watch with him even though I didnβt know what was going on. I was young. I would wait for it to finish so he could take me to bed. I get choked up every time I see it because it brings back those memories. He was a veteran by the way.
