@raindrain1 I mean, I guess I get what you're saying in a sense, but a part of what I adored most about Mass Effect as a series was the character arcs, and a lot of the characters WERE dealing with a lot of heavy shit that might make the GoT reference apt, in a metaphorical way if not a literal one. Wrex had given up hope on his people and was just stuck in a routine of fighting for money as his only goal in life, and it was only by coming onto Shepard's crew that he found enough will to give them another try. Miranda, despite her perfect genes, struggled with her dad's abuse and how it had left her emotionally distant. Thane confessed to being flat out suicidal before Shepard and the Normandy crew gave him something worthwhile to fight for and the support he needed to face his son. And even some of the characters who started out relatively okay, like Garrus and Tali, hit some BIG rock bottoms during the series and really had to struggle to come out the other side stronger than before. You're not wrong in that every one of them was badass and a professional, but most of them were missing something, or had lost something, or had been hurt or outcast in some way, and it was by coming together and fighting for each other that they found ways to heal and grow. It was the most beautiful part of the series for me.

This is undoubtabky the best moment in the series. For just a moment, you think that MAYBE there is a chance that you can pull it off. And Hacket's speech before hand is awesome. It would have been better if you could see the troops you gathered in action on earth. Maybe even a mechanic where you could call for help from these troops. I mean who didn't want to see the Elcor walking tanks or the Volus bombing fleet ffs!?

@briandavion Yeah I heard about that. One of the worst decisions ever made if you ask me. I'm no professional writer, but I think it should be obvious that if your story has been building up to a specific ending, suddenly changing it at the eleventh hour is just not a good idea. Sure it might add shock value, but that shock value only works on a first playthrough and won't save an otherwise unsatisfying conclusion, so it isn't worth sacrificing all of that build up. A good ending is a good ending regardless of whether people know it about or not. The ending they chose to go with just left everyone feeling empty. Personally I'm not so angry anymore since I think that the extended cut, while far from perfect, did a lot to correct many of the ending''s major failings and provide much needed closure. Still though, the fact is that the extended cut only exists to try and fix a problem that never should have been there in the first place.

@GodILoveAlcohol apparently it wasn't that they where rushed but that theyd ecided to completely change the ending at the last minute cause the ending had leaked and the writer decided to go with an "artsy" ending.

I think this moment is second best in the series besides the suicide mission. One is more grand and epic, while the other is tenser and personal, with characters you've become attached to at risk of death. Both are great, but the Suicide Mission soundtrack makes it more epic

I remember this one time in Stellaris when I was in a war with my playthrough's equivalent of the krogan and I don't know whether it was a ridiculous fleet that I missed or a powerful space station but they had somehow destroyed the vast majority of my 2nd fleet. So I had merged my 1st fleet and what was left of the 2nd to try take out what had destroyed my ships. Sometimes when I look back, I think that it would've looked and sounded like this when my fleet arrived to kick their ass back to their home world.

I had a similar battle, against the Prethoryn Scourge. Most of the empires had been destroyed, the only ones remaining being me, the smaller empires under my protectorate, an awakened empire, and the Sentinels.

My original world was being invaded and populations devoured. My largest fleet, and even my last, made up of the remnants of fleets that somehow tried to contain the infection was followed by the Sentinels and the best that the small empires under my protection had to offer. The larger fleet was invading my original system and preparing to leave it to Attack another when the combined fleets passed the hyperlink. When the fleet was destroyed an army of reconquest made up of several species of the galaxy, refugees in me and of my humans reconquered the planet. And after long battles, the Scourge was defeated, leaving a galaxy littered with the ruins of ancient galactic empires.

I am not going to lie. When the ships start pouring in and the full orchestral version of the title theme starts playing, I teared up. There is just something touching about the thought that here is the entire might of this galaxy you have been trying to save for a hundred and fifty hours of game, and they are ro the last man ready to risk everything for a last chance.

I like how every important mission in the trilogy begins with Joker at the helm with a smirk on his face, later with Edi co-piloting and providing some words of wisdom, and Shepard standing behind them with his arma crossed and a scowl on his face. And most of the time those missions always ended with Joker & EDI anxiously waiting for Shepard to run into the bridge at the last second, place his hand on Joker's chair and telling them to gun it. And before Shepard leaves the bridge Joker always tells a joke to lift Shepard's spirits, or he wishes him good fortune on the mission. But that last time, Joker was still waiting for Shepard to dash around the corner of the airlock, slam his hand on the back of the pilot's chair and yell, "Get us the hell out of here Joker, now!" But he never came. And instead Liara puts her hand on Joker's shoulder and says, "Jeff, we have to leave." Joker was still waiting for his friend to come back. That's how their missions always go. That was the first time Jeff had to leave his friend behind.

I my first playthrough, as a Renegon Ruthless Earthborn Infiltrator, I had left the council to die. Not by malice - my femshep respects the chain of command and the orders.
But in that case, the mission she was given was to stop Saren. Stopping Saren requires to stop Sovereign/Nazara. Which is why she opted for the fleet to concentrate on the reaper. She is all for helping people and such. As long as it doesn't conflict with her interests. In that case being her mission. Do the job at all cost. That's what she did.

Anyways, when I saw the fleet rolling in through the relay, I saw that close-up look on the asari dreadnought, I wondered why they did that. I understood a couple of seconds later that it's supposed to be the Destiny Ascension. But since the one in my playthrough got nuked by Sovereign, I find it somewhat lame to see a close-up on a random dreadnought. Doesn't have the same impact.

You're not understanding what I said, my concern is on the scene this soundtrack is playing, when all the ships are jumping into the Sol System, the Geth fleet are nowhere to be seen even though Joker called out they're ready.

For those of you out there talking about how easy it would be for a Halo weapon to destroy a Reaper, apparently you don't realize how powerful the shields of a non-Destroyer Reaper are. The Destroyers which Shepard and his team have defeated multiple times (Tuchanka and Earth more specifically) aren't that difficult to take down. But if you want to see how much punishment a Capital Ship can take, look at the Reaper in ME2 that's floating above Klendagon and look at the planet Klendagon itself. Klendagon and that Reaper were both struck by a Mass Accelerator weapon that created a gigantic rift in the planet's southern hemisphere that's easily viewable from really far away because of it's sheer size. Yet the Reaper was even able to survive that, though heavily damaged. Just sayin'.

I don't know where you're getting your info, but we don't have a concrete, official estimate of the mass of a Sovereign-class Reaper, and the Marathon-class heavy cruiser is canonically stated to weigh 100,000 tons. Check Halopedia, it has a citation specifically showing this. Also, as of Halo 5, the Eternity was very likely still under construction, so Cortana probably destroyed it or prevented it from ever being finished.

Marathon weighs over 9 million tons, similar to the Sovereign. And don't forget the Infinity-class (Infinity/Eternity + possibly 2 more), which is over 5 km long and can ram the capital ship apart without any damage.

The Forerunners would never need to do that. Even the UNSC pre-war wouldn't. I ran the numbers on the firepower of a frigate-sized MAC gun. It's still got at least 50% more kinetic energy (When factoring in the speed of the round and the round's mass) than a Systems Alliance dreadnought's main gun, and it would have the targeting systems to ensure those shots connect. We've seen dreadnoughts punching holes through Reapers before. It seems likely that during the final battle over Earth, Sword Fleet actually killed quite a few, considering the damage they did. The Turian Hierarchy also managed to destroy a number of Reapers, possibly even the Sovereign-class, over Palaven. A larger UNSC ship classification would be even deadlier to the Reapers, and they'd stand no chance of taking on an ODP 1v1.

What we know about physics and can apply to Halo and Mass Effect for a comparison suggests 2550s-era Halo technology, while not necessarily more advanced (A lot of it is comparably quite crude, although the AIs are far and away more advanced than any AIs in the Mass Effect universe aside from the Reapers themselves.), is still capable of clubbing the Reapers into submission conventionally. Yes, the Reapers will still do heavy damage but they also have to contend with the sheer numbers of ships they'd be going up against, and as they'd be even fights, the Reapers cannot rely on the same strategies they've always used. There would be no need to fire the Array. And the Covenant Empire? They'd beat the Reapers, no question. The Forerunners would barely blink. They'd dispatch a small fleet of (by their standards) low-tonnage vessels to mop up what would amount to a dangerous nuisance at best.

I think it's worth noting that the Reapers deliberately manipulated the races of the Mass Effect Milky Way to develop along the technological lines they needed them to. They held them back, in effect. This is an issue Halo does not have. Halo vs. Mass Effect is best described as the "rock beats laser" trope: Halo human and Covenant technology, especially for ground warfare, is largely inferior to Mass Effect's. "Regular infantry" in Mass Effect would actually pose a serious threat even to Spartans. Certainly Spartans can't do anything quite like a Vanguard's Biotic Charge attack. But in space, their relatively simple technology still has raw, brute force behind it. Reapers are machines, and they can be broken with enough force. Halo ships have that level of force. Hell, if all else fails, a ramming attack would probably do a Reaper in: Most Halo ships are ridiculously large for their class relative to a Mass Effect equivalent. Medium to heavy cruisers like the Marathon-class are nearly a kilometer and a half long, which is almost the size of a Sovereign-class Reaper. They also weigh a hundred thousand tons. Plowing into one at high speeds would likely be fatal.

This scene, the moment the Normandy appears with this amazing, simply amazing piece of music, followed by the hundreds if not thousands of ships from the various allied galactic forces, has got to be up there with the best moments in all of TV, film and gaming media. The moment all you have been working towards finally come together, all fleets, races come together to start the final battle! As far as I care, the real ending was the moment the fleets arrived. It was the last time anything relevant happened that was the direct result of decisions you made in previous games, and left me with a pride to be human I can't describe.

If I somehow never wanted to interact with semi-benevolent alien races before that moment, there was no way I'd still feel that way afterwards.

Somehow, they managed to match, if not mirror, the moment Joker took the Normandy into that dive against Harbringer. The rest of the "ending" aside, Bioware knows how to make your hair stand on end. Like no one else.

That was a key moment for me too. Humans might be intriguing, ignorant dickheads sometime, but never underestimate the good ones among us. While others fought for the glory and the gain of power, we fought for the universe. The trilogy was a masterpiece (and a pretty philosophical one).

My favorite part of this scene is when the SR2 Normandy was heading towards the Earth followed by the entire galactic fleet a few seconds later. Shepard had come a long way from the prophetic soldier to an actual commander in chief of the milky way's galactic forces.

This scene made me feel like a kid on Christmas day. Every. single. goddamn ship in the galaxy in one fleet for one purpose. Seeing all those ships coming through the mass relay AND THEY KEPT COMING FOR A GOOD MINUTE. I don't think there's anything that could ever top that on the epic scale for me.

What about the music that plays when you(Sheppard) see the Citadel for the first time in ME1? For me that was also one of the defining moments of the series. I believe they call it 'The Citadel'.

actually recently they have been developing shielding and the spartans (2-4) have energy shielding which blocks both energy and kinetic. and the average covenant ship is TWICE the size of a reaper and has energy based weapons which even the reapers have no defense. The UNSC has also developed shielding for their ships which fire rounds that are the equivalent of a 100 megatons of TNT on contact BIG BOOM!

I think the fleets of the Mass Effect universe would definitely defeat the UNSC, but the Covenant Empire could probably challenge even the Reapers. Their plasma weapons are pretty powerful, and their ships are huge. The average Covenant ship is around a kilometer in length, and a Covenant Super-Carrier is about 29 kilometers in length. Most of the Mass Effect ships are much smaller than that.

most of the big ships in the fleet in ME battles are huge and slow too, and their primary guns arent nearly as powerful. granted the UNSC would also take huge losses, they would be much more effective at killing reapers. one MAC round would most likely punch straight through a reaper. maybe not enough to kill it, but when every ship has one, the reapers wouldnt last long. both sides would have heavy losses, just the UNSC would be less than the ME alliance (in my opinion)

If you listen to the soldiers at the entrance to the citadel in ME2, they say that the projectiles, going as fast as they do (1.3% light speed, or roughly 8.7 million miles per hour), impact with the force of multiple nukes, which, because it is a projectile, not a bomb, all the force is concentrated at the point of impact. nukes would actually do less damage (EMPs might work though), especially because in space there is no air to carry the shockwave. :P

That giant "rubik's cube" will assimilate reapers just like any other species they encounter and use them against each other. I think a single cube will be enough to defeat the reapers. After they assimilate a single reaper, they get all their tech and know all their weaknesses, so its a win.

MAC rounds do the same amount of damage, in Mass Effect 2 there is a sergeant on the Citadel who says one of the rounds has 3x the power of a nuke dropped on earth.

Thing is...even in the Halo books, at first, Nukes had very little effectiveness in space. Now, I think it was early in the war, but I never remember reading hw they got them to work. But when fighting the innies, those Nuke where Highly ineffective.

oh i know that, but I just meant that they would have a much larger chance than the ME fleet did. The way i could see reapers adjusting to combat the super macs is to outmaneuver them. MACs have to be shot in a straight line and reapers are extremely fast if i remember right. but if you look at the fleet battle again, most of the main guns on ME ships only shoot forward too.but like I said, both the alliance and UNSC would lose in time, i just think the UNSC would have less losses in that battle

It would be true if the scene could show ALL fleets battle,we only see the turian and humans ships battle,we don't see quarian,salarian,hanari,volus,geth doing anything.Would have been really epic to see some officers yelling "FIRE!!" and some humans with other species in their Starfighters fighting together with a formation and everything.This scene is epic ofc but for me this could have been much better :D

I doubt it. Keep in mind, the Reapers have been harvesting advanced civilizations for over a billion years. They know more about war than the UNSC and even with super MACS, they'd find someway to adjust tactically. At the end of the day, if they can't win by firepower, they'll win by sheer numbers. In Mass Effect, you bring the combined might of the entire Galaxy upon the Reapers and even then its not enough.

I wouldn't be too sure about that. In terms of space combat, the UNSC could do quite a bit of damage with their MAC rounds, and the average Covenant ship is about the size of a Reaper capital ship, and each Covenant ship has pretty powerful plasma weaponry. For example, a Covenant Super-Carrier is 29 kilometers in length, I'm pretty sure that could take on multiple Reapers. However, in terms of ground combat, the Mass Effect universe would defeat Halo.

They don't need nuclear weapons. Their main guns fire a shell at such a velocity that it impacts an enemy target with the same energy and the same destructive force as a nuclear weapon. Keep in mind, it takes 4 dreadnoughts to so much as take down a Reaper's shields. That's essentially 4 nuclear weapons being fired at a single ship just to take down its shields. The UNSC or the Covenant wouldn't last 5 minutes against the Reapers alone.

Halo is a great game and so is Mass Effect but if you're really going to compare look at fleet size, the reapers have 2km ships that are fully functional AI which are self aware. They have been making these for over 37 million years, plus they shoot at near lightspeed and turn your troops into their troops.

The UNSC have far less in terms of technology compared to the Alliance. I think the only thing the UNSC would have up against the Alliance that would be considered SUPERIOR is probably Spartans (I'm just gonna say Spartan-II) and FTL technology (slipspace and all)

A MAC outputs (using the Gettysburg of 600 tons at 30 km/s) roughly 58 kilotons every few minutes. Dreadnought cannons of ME output 38 kilotons per four seconds.Super Macs, firing 3000 tons at 120 km/s outputs 4676 gigatons every five seconds (if the wiki is to be believed). Mass Effect has nothing on that.

As cool as the scene looks, it makes no sense.

You remember how a relay works? Using a relay causes drift. You have a set arrival point, but you will never exactly reach it, you have room for error. The Omega 4 relay uses special protocols to reduce that drift.

Now for one ship that isn't a big deal.

Let's have a fleet all warp to the same location. Most of these ships will collide because of drift.

When we are referencing a "super" MAC are we talking about when they had a UNSC ship and a covenant frigate mated together and they turned the MAC gun into a plasma cannon. Or are we talking about the orbital MAC guns like around Reach?

Quite likely,the only reason the ME fleet even had a chance was because every single weapon they used in battle was made from reverse-engneered technology Sovereign left behind. In other words,even after all the high boasting and preaching you do,Shepard is doing the exact same thing Cerberus was, using Reaper tech to defeat the Reapers.

It will always bug me that even though I had 9,000+ war assets, we were still at a "disadvantage" for the Battle of Earth. Then during the mission "Most of Hammer hasn't showed up, well that kinda sucks derp." Do you mean to tell me that the entire Turian or Asari ground forces are just farting around somewhere else? What did I read every single one of those assets for then?

but you cant compare those games they are very different law wise and story wise plus ones a shooter where you follow the story of one guy that cant be changed and the other is an rpg were you make your own story through the choices you make but they are still both fantastic games in there own way

Was I the only one expecting when I got ALL the fleets together. ALL my RIGHT choices. ALL my war assets. To melt together into this one moment. THAT SHEPARD would would actually live through it! I don't "hate" the ending. But shit bioware I spent over 200 dollars on this series plus DLC. So couldn't you at least give us an interactive epilogue comic or SOMETHING so my characters could have some damn closure!

You forget that the Reapers failed to indoctrinate even half the Mass effect universe leaders. Shepard, Garus, Anderson, Liara, Tali all were out there kicking ass. Spartans would be less likely to be indoctrinated than most as would captains of starships. Btw, this is actually quite an interesting though experiment, mainly because there is no right answer, it's completely subjective. :D

but as stated, i was just wondering why they dont carry nukes. UNSCs main guns are MACs which would tear straight through a reaper. it may take a few rounds, but they would have a much larger chance. Not to mention super MACs, that would 1 shot a reaper. (I actually kinda want to see this space fight now)
