'O surdato 'nnammurato
Massimo Ranieri Lyrics

Staje luntana da stu core,
a te volo cu 'o penziero:
niente voglio e niente spero
ca tenerte sempe a fianco a me!
Si' sicura 'e chist'ammore
comm'i' só' sicuro 'e te...

Oje vita, oje vita mia...
oje core 'e chistu core...
si' stata 'o primmo ammore...
e 'o primmo e ll'ùrdemo sarraje pe' me!

Quanta notte nun te veco,
nun te sento 'int'a sti bbracce,
nun te vaso chesta faccia,
nun t'astregno forte 'mbraccio a me?!
Ma, scetánnome 'a sti suonne,
mme faje chiagnere pe' te...

Oje vita, oje vita mia...
oje core 'e chistu core...
si' stata 'o primmo ammore...
e 'o primmo e ll'ùrdemo sarraje pe' me!

Scrive sempe e sta' cuntenta:
io nun penzo che a te sola...
Nu penziero mme cunzola,
ca tu pienze sulamente a me...
'A cchiù bella 'e tutt''e bbelle,
nun è maje cchiù bella 'e te!

Oje vita, oje vita mia...
oje core 'e chistu core...

si' stata 'o primmo ammore...
e 'o primmo e ll'ùrdemo sarraje pe' me!

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Massimo Ranieri's song 'O surdato 'nnammurato' speak of a deep and passionate love that endures despite distance and separation. The singer expresses that he wants nothing else but to have his loved one always by his side. He is certain of his love and believes that she reciprocates these feelings. The pain of separation is palpable in the second stanza, where he laments not being able to see or hold her. He expresses his longing for her presence and cries for her. Nevertheless, he finds solace in the thought that she thinks of him as much as he thinks of her. He believes that she is the most beautiful woman in the world and cherishes her as his first and last love.

The song 'O surdato 'nnammurato' is considered a classic Neapolitan love song that has been popular for over a century. It was written by Aniello Calipo and composed by Enrico Cannio in 1915 during World War I. The song reflects the emotions of soldiers who were separated from their loved ones and fighting in the war. The pianist Ferdinand Albeggiani arranged the song for the famous tenor Enrico Caruso, who made the first recording in 1916. Since then, the song has been covered by numerous artists, including Luciano Pavarotti and Andrea Bocelli. The song has also been featured in films and television shows, such as The Godfather Part III and The Sopranos.

Staje luntana da stu core,
You are far away from my heart,

a te volo cu 'o penziero:
But my thoughts fly to you:

niente voglio e niente spero
I want nothing and hope for nothing

ca tenerte sempe a fianco a me!
Except to have you always by my side!

Si' sicura 'e chist'ammore
You are sure of this love,

comm'i' só' sicuro 'e te...
As I am sure of you.

Oje vita, oje vita mia...
Oh life, oh my life...

oje core 'e chistu core...
Oh heart of my heart...

si' stata 'o primmo ammore...
You were my first love...

e 'o primmo e ll'ùrdemo sarraje pe' me!
And the first and last for me!

Quanta notte nun te veco,
How many nights I don't see you,

nun te sento 'int'a sti bbracce,
I don't feel you in my arms,

nun te vaso chesta faccia,
I don't see your face,

nun t'astregno forte 'mbraccio a me?!
I don't hold you tightly to me?!

Ma, scetánnome 'a sti suonne,
But waking me up with these sounds,

mme faje chiagnere pe' te...
Makes me cry for you...

Scrive sempe e sta' cuntenta:
You always write and stay happy:

io nun penzo che a te sola...
I don't think of anyone else but you...

Nu penziero mme cunzola,
A thought torments me,

ca tu pienze sulamente a me...
That you only think of me...

'A cchiù bella 'e tutt''e bbelle,
The most beautiful of all beauties,

nun è maje cchiù bella 'e te!
Is never more beautiful than you!

I heard this song in a friend's home in Naples. They sang this after dinner when we sat together and sung our songs.
And again on the street of Rimini sung in a hotel premises by a band playing for a group of seniors.

I love this song more and more as I listen to this song.
I don't understand much Italian though.

Italians, you are special!

Lots of love from India.

Ciao,

"" Oje vita, oje vita mia ""

Saluti da Parigi ;-)

@@RajKumar-bc6up The song is actually in Neapolitan, which is its own language, not Italian. Here's my rough translation:

Title: The Soldier in Love.

Lyrics:
You are far away from this heart (of mine),
I fly towards you in my thoughts.
There's nothing I want, nothing I hope for,
Except for always having you by my side!
Be certain of this love
As I am certain about (loving) you...

Oh, life. Oh, life of mine...
Oh, heart of my heart...
You were the first love,
And the first and last love you'll be for me!

How many nights I haven't seen you?
Haven't felt you in my arms?
Haven't kissed your face?
Haven't held you tight in my arms?
Instead, I wake up from my dreams,
And I cry for you...

Oh, life. Oh, life of mine...
Oh, heart of my heart...
You were the first love,
The first and last love you'll be for me!

Write to me (letters) always and be at ease:
I think about you only.
One thought consoles me:
The fact that you think of me only.
Even the most beautiful among all the most beautiful,
Will never be as beautiful as you!

Oh, life. Oh, life of mine...
Oh, heart of my heart...
You were the first love,
The first and last love you'll be for me!

Thank you for listening to our music ❤️

This song brings me back to my childhood. My dad was from Italy and my mom's parents were from Italy. I danced to this song with my big sister at parties. My parents are in heaven and my sister married an American guy, so I hadn't heard this song in a long time. A perfume commercial brought all the fun memories flooding right in.

@danielagambel1590

I heard this this song growing up . Both my parents came here to America from Italy. I just heard this on a commercial for a Dolce and Gabbana perfume

@danielagambel1590  That's where I heard it. Both of my parents are in heaven now, but this was a lovely reminder of them and my childhood.

It is the text of a letter that a soldier at war writes to his beloved.

@maurorocco3251
