One of the most popular entertainers in Italy today, he came to the knowledge of the public by winning two editions of the Canzonissima song festival in 1970 and 1972 with "L'Amore È Un Attimo" and "Chi Sarà", and by representing Italy in the Eurovision song contest in 1971 in which he ended up 5th with "L'Amore È Un Attimo", as well as in 1973 when he ended 13th with Chi sara con te. In 1988 he won the San Remo Festival with song "Perdere l'amore", which became one of his greatest hits. He is a constant presence on Italian TV as singer and master of ceremonies. He co-starred in the movie "La Sciantosa" with Anna Magnani. Recently, his CD, "Oggi o dimane" —renditions of his native Neapolitan songs set to North African instrumentation—has had a great success.
Probably his most popular disc was "Rose rosse" which featured his hits "Rose "rosse and "Quando l'amore diventa poesia".
Maruzzella

E chi mo canta appriesso a mme?
Ohè! pe' tramente
S'affaccia 'a luna pe vede'.
Pe' tutta sta marina
'a Proceda a Resina
Se dice: guarda llà
'na femmena che fa!
T'he miso dint' a ll'uocchie
'o mare, e m'he miso
'npietto a me 'nu dispiacere.
Stu core me fai sbattere
Chiu forte 'e l'onne
Quanno o cielo è scuro:
Primma me dice sì,
Po' doce doce me fai murì,
Maruzzella, Maruzzè...
Ohè! chi m'aiuta,
Si tu nun viene a m'aiutà?
Ohè, m'è venuta
Na voglia ardente 'e te vasà...
E vienetenne oj bella,
E damme sta vucchella
Ca pe' m'avvelenà
'e zucchero se fa!

The song "Maruzzella" by Massimo Ranieri is a beautiful love ballad that tells the story of a man who is deeply in love with a woman named Maruzzella. The opening lines of the song are an invitation to the listener to pay attention to the singer and to the story he is about to tell. He asks who is listening and who is singing next to him. He then draws attention to the moon, which has appeared in the sky, as if to set the mood for his tale.
The singer then describes the setting, a beautiful seaside town named Proceda a Resina, where he and Maruzzella are admiring the view. He describes how the woman's eyes are as deep and blue as the sea, and how his heart beats faster when he is with her. The chorus, "Maruzzella, Maruzzè, T'he miso dint' a ll'uocchie" (Maruzzella, Maruzzè, I’ve put you inside my eyes), reinforces this idea of Maruzzella being the center of the singer's world. He is so deeply in love with her that even the sea seems small in comparison.
The second half of the song is a plea to Maruzzella to come to him, to help him quell his burning desire for her. He professes his love and begs her to come to him, even if it means bringing him a sweet little kiss that could poison him. The closing lines of the song reveal that the singer is powerless to resist Maruzzella's charms, and that he would gladly die for her if he had to.
Overall, "Maruzzella" is a timeless love song that captures the essence of true love and desire. The singer's yearning for Maruzzella is palpable, and the imagery and metaphors used throughout the song add to its emotional impact.
