This movie is still so much fun to watch! I bought the soundtrack with my own money because my dad refused to. I watched my VHS copy of it so many times that I can quote it and I frequently do! I kind of wish it would get remade because I think the scenarios could be a lot more visceral. Leaving the logic behind it all alone and focusing on the scenes these various malfunctions could cause might be the right route. I mean, a lawnmower coming after someone should have a payoff, not just a background treatment, same with the chainsaw. The fear of parting with some of your body is truly disturbing and I think if done well a remake could actually be quite terrifying. The timing would be perfect if they used the same effects people that "Leatherface" did because from the interviews I saw, those people figured out a way for the chainsaw scenes to not just be cutaways. I plan to see it after "Jigsaw", not before...priorities, hehe! Anyhoos, "Maximum Overdrive" was never supposed to be "Psycho" or any film like that and I think appealing to the baser nature of showing the violence would work for a remake. Also, that steamroll scene originally included fake blood spurting and spinning on the steamroller but King himself thought it was too much when he saw it. Whatever piece of that is wrong is just bad memory but I do know I read it somewhere. Cheers to this video for not just tearing the film apart as it is a great memory for a lot of people.

I always loved this movie, with my favorite part being the guy that got pop-canned to death.

I was so confused, looking for a book or short story from King titled "Maximum Overdrive". I simply could not understand why I wasn't finding one. It wad hard for me to accept, but it appeared that King originally wrote it as a screenplay. I never knew he directed it until today.

As far as I was concerned, it was really about aliens. They used our machines to wipe us out, and intended to move in to take over after we were gone. The comet was a weapon devised by those aliens. But when they showed up, a "weather satellite" took out their ship. So it was ultimately a machine that saved humanity's survivors.

Thanks for reviewing this, it's a really fun movie. What makes it even better is to find out that Stephen King directed it and he was "coked out of his mind" at the time. Yup, that makes sense. 💜💟💙

I have it on VHS and DVD. I'm still looking for the elusive 'uncut' version. BTW Why is this STILL not available on Blu-ray? You'd think that companies like Blue Underground, Unearthed Films, Criterion Collection, Lion's Gate or Miramax would release Maximum Overdrive as a collector's edition on Blu-ray and/or DVD.

I remember watching similar movie when I was a kid. A group of survivors was attacked by machines at a dinner or a gas station. In the end a helicopter came and saved them and as main character shifted to thank the pilot, we see that there's no pilot. The end.

I actually watched this movie for the first time when it came out in the theaters. My friends and I thought it was great fun and even Oscar worthy. For us, the best scene was the guy getting hit in the crotch by the soda machine (yes, we were idiot 12-13 year olds at the time and that is considered the height of comedy). Thanks so much for bringing back fond memories. Please do some more videos with you and Jamie together. You two have great chemistry.

This movie has a special place in my heart, It was the first summer where I discovered that I can actually stay up past 8pm. So on a surge filled night I stayed up to watch some TV, cause back then staying up all night to watch t.v. was the cool thing. I found this series on TNT called "Monster Vision" and I was hooked! But this movie, this damn movie was the first time I've ever seen or experience and learned.....kids can die in movies...and it haunted me for days. To the point where I asked my mom, "can kids die?", her response, "all the time"......it also taught me that dogs can die in movies too which feels worse.

I lived in the town where it was made and was a frequent visitor to the Dixie Boy Truck Stop before it was blown to bits. I used to sit on the counter as a wee baby and try to get pickles out of the giant jar they had on the counter. :)

I fkn love this flick. Maximum Overdrive is a slice of 80s awesome sauce. Yeah, it's got it's overacting moments. But I friggin love it. It's the first time I ever saw a kid buy it on screen. Two things: first, the drink machine fired after killing coach to try to nail some kids. And second, it's the Dixie Boy; I don't remember it EVER being called Gas World. Otherwise, great review.

This movie is sort of hard for me to sit through. Just way too cheesy. However, I do like the moment when Bubba tell Emilio to get in his office and Emilio (in a bad southern accent) yells back in protest, “ I got eggs on!”

I've never seen Maximum Overdrive, but I knew about it thanks to the Nostalgia Critic. My favorite King adaptation is one a lot of people don't really talk about: The Stand miniseries. It's kind of a default for me because it's the only King book I've ever read (I don't really like horror, anxiety disorder and a highly active imagination are not good things to mix with horror) But I do genuinely like it and I think it's a pretty faithful adaptation (even if they had to cut a lot because the book is GINORMOUS) I also really like Stand By Me, but I've never read the short story it's based on, so I can't judge it as an adaptation

But this movie It's a real scary aspect without being so science fiction, just our normal everyday machines coming to life and wanting to kill us is a lot scarier than a bunch of cyborgs... I'd like to remake this movie one day with one major change. There's gotta be one protagonist vehicle. Just one. No explanation, no real reason why, it's just gotta be there to mix things up. I'm not saying there has to be a Volkswagen Beetle named Herbie, but there has to be a single vehicle either neutral to the entire conflict or partially loyal to the side of humans in some way. I don't know, I just think it'd be interesting to see.

But 2 years ago he got a cover up on it as Lady Liberty....With Pucker Lips (WAA WAA)

I read Salem's Lot over a few days time and watch this movie a day later, for all of his accolades Stephen King is still an underrated writer in my option. The vocab, the style, the sense of both horror and humor, the guy provides nothing but Top Sheft, Grade A quality product. And yes the last comment is both true and quick shout out to Gus Fring for his cameo in this film.

I loved this growing up and I still do is it perfect heck no but still do love. The guy that went back to get the ring he is also in eight legged freaks he's the guy who owns the mall. The movie I would like to you to watch and see how you think about it is that another Stephen King adaptation and it's silver bullet by far one of my top favorite werewolves films it freaked me out as a kid and it still has me a little freaked out from time to time about looking out windows always wished he would make a novel to that I mean he did this little graphic novel with someone of it but that's how it is. Oh it would also be awesome if he did a book on fluffy the monster that's in the Box in the Creepshow movie

I first saw this movie when I was a kid about 9 or 10. Not only that, I watched the movie countless times. This movie never managed to scare me. Which is odd because I hate horror movies. Not even the green goblin truck scared me. If anything this movie might've introduced me to the joy of films that are so bad they're good. Speaking of that, if you get a chance look up "How Did This Get Made Maximum Overdrive".
