This is one of those movies to me that I don't tire of watching over and over again. Just finished my 20+ rewatch and I've yet to spot one scene/dialogue/plot point/frame that simply isn't marvelous! The music is riveting and powerful yet never supersedes any visual moment in the movie, just empowers it. Amazing work!!

Don't know why but I find the ships from long ago so beautiful. I watch this movie a lot - have it in my video stash. Never get tired of it. And the music is the best and brings up all the emotions of the story.

I have been on USS Constitution in Boston Harbor (which I believe the French vessel in Master and Commander is modeled after), and the complexity of the rigging and the lines of her hull, it is hard to put into words just how amazing it is.

They were beautiful. And not just from our perspective, but for those who lived in that era. Before rail, before planes, and before good roads, ships were the lifeblood of many a coastal city and town. In the early colonial era, the arrival of a ship was like Christmas in miniature, an event worthy of being recorded in the newspaper; everything that they couldn't make themselves was aboard: Paris silk for that new dress your daughter had been wanting to make for months, the ivory chess set your grandad ordered from Bruge, books from London, tea from China (very important). Other times they brought necesities like whale oil for candles, cod for soup, lumber, metal, sugar, salt, you name it. For those who came from sailing families they brought back friends and loved ones. So many writers of the time waxed poetic of their sleek lines and white sails. Even the slave ships had a beauty from afar, at least until you got close enough to smell them and hear the wailing sound of their shameful cargo below.

Nowadays, we take ships for granted. They're larger, safer, and move much cargo than before. But we rarely see them. Even the cargo is unanimous inside those big, indistinguihsable steel containers. Ships have become so automated that it takes fewer men to crew todays vessels, and those jobs are mostly outsourced to men from Third World countries working in poor conditions.

Loved the historical accuracy in this - when they play cricket on the beach there are only two stumps. That is how cricket was originally played right through the middle ages and up to the 19th century when the middle stump was added.

The whole cast and crew were perfect. Crowe=superb! Music=fantastic. As a mate below stated the ships of back there were beautiful! Oh God your sea is so big, and my ship is so small. Think I'll watch it tonight. It's a great movie, and again Crowe's voice is just grand. The most sad part is the guy who drowns himself.

If I had a man cave this movie would be running on a large HD screen 24/7. It is easily my favorite.
It has great character development, great battles and a slew of wonderful actors. I will never stop watching this movie:)
It's epic with incredible cinematography. I've even developed an interest in British naval history and it's command structure.

I didn't know who Patrick O'Brian was when this film came out. I bought and devoured the books. Since then, I have not found any media book or film that comes close. In my mind Jack and Stephen are real people. Absolutely wonderful.

It is the American nose dive pigeon. It flies nose first into creepy little cliff walls really fast and sometimes dies hitting the concrete wall flying like a falling knife so fast. It is also native to the rocky island shores of Virginia. Robert E Lee saw one one time and wrote a article about its arrogance in flying so fast into a freaking wall.

I love this movie. It really takes you back to April 1805, when Napoleon is the Master of Europe. Only the British Fleet stands before him and the oceans were battlefields. The sea battles are very organic and epic. Patrick O'Brien put together a great novel.

In May 1805, during the Napoleonic Wars, Captain Jack Aubrey of HMS Surprise is ordered to pursue the French privateer Acheron, and "Sink, Burn or take her [as] a Prize." The British warship is ambushed by Acheron; Surprise is heavily damaged, while its own cannon fire does not penetrate the enemy ship's hull. Using smaller boats, the crew of Surprise tow the ship into a fog bank and evade pursuit. Meanwhile, Aubrey learns from a crewman who saw Acheron being built that it is heavier and faster than Surprise, and the senior officers consider the ship out of their class. Aubrey notes that such a ship could tip the balance of power in Napoleon's favour if allowed to plunder the British whaling fleet at will. He orders pursuit of Acheron, rather than returning to port for repairs. Acheron again ambushes Surprise, but Aubrey slips away in the night by using a clever decoy buoy and ships lamps.

the ship is not the Acheron but in fact the USS Constitution you might think i'm wrong because of the book but the ship was built in the United States using a hull made of Oak and Live Oak (which is only found in certain parts of the United States) making her hull bounce most of the weight of shot used during the time, the changed the name and made it french, because the american public wouldn't like an English ship beating an American one

I think the section starting at around 5:52 is one of the coolest classically influenced pieces of music in modern history. What a fabulous, fabulous movie! The score, as amazing as it is (esp Yo Yo Ma's playing of Bach's Cello Suite #1) is only complimented by the masterful visuals and story line, particularly the conflict/freinship between Russell Crow's Captain Aubrey and Paul Bettany's Dr. Maturin.

I agree! Though, a movie which uses The Marius Command for the main plot would be awesome. The film could bring in a land battle, the battle in which the Sirius and the Nereide are taken, and a final action inspired by the battle against the French fleet in HMS Surprise, where Surprise goes up against a 74 to save the China Fleet. Pullings could have beena a captain of one of the ships under Aubrey's command... If I had $200 million to spare, I would have that movie made and not even care about profits!

kunnarp Unfortunately, the makers have no intention at present to make a sequel because the box office returns were too small. A great pity, because I think the film surpassed the books on which it was based.

If the sequel picks up where the original left off, Russ Crowe will somehow have to appear not to have aged 14 years in the space of an evening. Indeed, they all will. Think they could pull it off?

As much as I love this movie, I love the books even more: they last longer ;-) However, having seen the movie (several times), when I read the books I see Russell Crowe and Paul Bettany - in other words: great casting.

Watching this movie the other day I realised if I had one place in history to visit it might be the docks of late 1800th century London. To walk rows of these great sailing ships and a see recognisable people working their trade would be a sight never to forget.
