The band is named after the album "Master of Reality" by Black Sabbath.
After its first incarnation - which consisted of Chris Goss, Tim Harrington, Vinnie Ludovico and Googe - broke apart in 1989, the band developed into a band with alternating lineups. Masters of Reality resurfaced making headlines when former Cream drumming-legend Ginger Baker joined the band on their second album Sunrise on the Sufferbus which was recorded in 1992. Although the band landed a Top 10 chart hit with the single "She Got Me (When She Got Her Dress On)" Baker left the band only one year later. Victor Indrizzo, at that time drummer for Circus of Power, was asked to join and fill the vacant spot and agreed.
Goss' connection to Queens of the Stone Age resulted from producing Kyuss albums and in the collaborative CD Deep in the Hole in 2001, and two years later, in the release of the subsequent live album Flak 'n' Flight.
Since their formation, Masters of Reality has made very different kinds of music, ranging from Stoner metal over progressive art rock to Beatlesque pop music.
Besides his involvement with this "project", frontman Chris Goss is also a very important producer (Kyuss, Soulwax, Melissa Auf der Maur, The Eighties Matchbox B-Line Disaster etc.) and has contributed to many other bands in the Palm Desert Scene and beyond.
Doraldina's Prophecies
Masters of Reality Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Oh my, little shiny thing
Gets me in the morning
Bringing me round
From the deepest sleep
Wakin' me up
And layin' me down
When I was just a little boy
I tried to cross the river
Jumped on an alligator
I thought he was a horse
Oh my, little shiny thing
Get me, get me everything
Oh my, little Doraldine
Get me in the morning
And bring me 'round
From the deepest sleep
Wakin' me up and layin' me down
Layin' me down
Oh my
Oh sister Doraldine
Get me in the morning
Bringing me 'round
From the deepest sleep
Wakin' me up
And laying me down
When we were just a little girl
We tried to catch the bluebird
But he grabbed her and he ate her
Oh, look out!
The lyrics to Masters of Reality's song "Doraldina's Prophecies" are open to interpretation and can be seen as a stream of consciousness. The first stanza talks about a "little shiny thing" that wakes up the singer from the deepest sleep and lays them down. This could be a reference to a person, a drug or an object. In the next stanza, the singer reminisces about a childhood experience where they mistook an alligator for a horse and tried to cross a river on it. This could symbolize a naïve attempt at navigating life's challenges. The chorus talks about the "little Doraldine" who brings the singer "round" from their slumber and lays them down again. The second verse tells of another childhood experience where the singer and their sister tried to catch a bluebird, but it was eaten by another creature.
Overall, the song seems to be about nostalgia, childhood memories, and the human need for comfort and companionship. The use of animals in the lyrics could be seen as a metaphor for innocence and purity, which is lost as one grows older. The repeated reference to being woken up and laid down could symbolize the cyclical nature of life and the need for rest and renewal.
