Black Tongue
Mastodon Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I burned out my eyes
I cut off my tongue
I sealed them with all of the silver
And now I have none

You killed the life
You took the diamond
You killed the vine
Death of the

You own the darkness
And taken my sight
You buried the stars underground
You've stolen the night

You can run to the sea
You can run to the forest
You can hide, but you'll never escape

You've run out of lies
You've run out of time

You killed the life
You took the diamond

You killed the vine
Death of the sun

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Mastodon's "Black Tongue" paint a picture of a person who has undergone a drastic transformation, cutting off their tongue and burning out their eyes, and sealing them with silver. The imagery of losing one's tongue and eyes indicates a loss of the ability to communicate and see, rendering them helpless and powerless. The silver symbolizes a sealing, as if preventing any chance of reversing the damage.

The song also touches on themes of loss and grief, with the repeated lines "You killed the life, you took the diamond, you killed the vine, death of the sun". This suggests a metaphorical death caused by someone else's actions, leaving the singer feeling trapped and without hope. Additionally, the lyrics allude to the idea of someone trying to escape their problems, with the lines "You can run to the sea, you can run to the forest, you can hide, but you'll never escape". This could be a nod to the idea that one cannot simply run away from their problems, but must confront them head-on.

Overall, "Black Tongue" is a powerful song that explores themes of loss, grief, powerlessness, and the futility of running away from one's problems.

@MrBillSmauz

Mastodon is easily becoming one of my favorite metal groups right alongside Tool.

@pieinyourface1

how does this band manage to just keep getting better and better? They have to sell out eventually don't they? This is goddamn amazing, their songs are getting so much more intricate and the singing is spot on, yet its still got that devastating mastodon feel to it, good job!!!!

@turaly0n

This song rules.

@AntonDoesMusic

Maybe it's different from their old stuff, but shit, at least they're not playing in 4/4 the whole time. And at least there's more than 2 riffs in each song. And also they're all incredibly talented in their own way, and it's not just the guitarist that's awesome. They may not be as grungey or screamy as they used to be, but they're still putting out progressive, creative, and most importantly, DIFFERENT music. if you want a band that sounds the fucking same 20 years later, listen to Slayer.

@JoeOldest

I feel like this song should be another five minutes long. Cause I didn't want it to end.
