Chimes at Midnight
Mastodon Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I saw the mountain crumble down
I saw colossus in flames
I heard the ocean draining
Nothing that I could ever tame

Off with my head, come down the line
I have the right to decide
I'll bring this light, as is the sky
Altered minds they criticize

Unrest within your flesh
How can we stop this pollution?

Altering trouble, you cannot fix
Envy of others never makes me rich
All my heroes, they're all dead
I remain here inside my

We have heard the chimes at midnight
Into the void I go
Will I ever see your face again
Or will blank be all I know

Arriving inside
Ire hurts a life

And the darkness here is grim
But it found us, surrounded
Lead me deep into the canyon
You push your guidance in the wrong hands

Feet ungrounded, giving your best
Now take your gold into silence
You take a stand, bracing yourself
For this cold is never ending

We have heard the chimes at midnight
Into the void I go
Will I ever see your face again
Or will blank be all I know

Arriving inside
Ire hurts a life

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Mastodon's song "Chimes at Midnight" suggest an impending doom and a sense of hopelessness. The singer seems to be witnessing the destruction of the world as they know it, with images of mountains crumbling down and colossal fires engulfing the landscape. The powerlessness of the situation is emphasized through the description of the ocean draining and the fact that there is nothing the singer can do to stop it. Despite this, there is a sense of determination and self-empowerment as the singer declares their right to decide and bring their own light into the darkness. The criticism they face from those with altered minds suggests a struggle against societal norms and expectations.

The second verse brings in a more personal aspect, describing the unrest within one's own flesh and the struggle to combat pollution. The singer recognizes that envy of others will not bring them wealth and laments the loss of their heroes. They remain trapped within themselves, with no way out. The chorus repeats the haunting line "We have heard the chimes at midnight" which further emphasizes the sense of impending doom. The final verse brings in imagery of being lost within a canyon, with the guidance from others ultimately leading them astray. The singer prepares for the cold that is "never-ending" and seems resigned to this fate.

I feel like I'm in the minority of Mastodon fans: I loved every single album.

I want to buy two copies of each CD: one set to own and listen to, and the other to grind into a fine powder and snort on a daily basis.
