Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Mastodon's song March of the Fire Ants depict vivid imagery of passion and destruction. The opening lines, "As passion encircles the daily storm, The heart bleeds and droughts do not," could be interpreted as a metaphor for the intensity of emotion and how it can consume everything in its path, leaving no room for rational thought or logic. The repetition of "bone grave, bone engraved, stone grave, stone engraved" could symbolize the inevitability of death and how all living things will eventually turn into dust or stone.

The second verse introduces the idea of circles being created with intention, perhaps referring to the cyclical nature of life or the recurring patterns of behavior that people fall into. The line "An ocean turns yellow, it soothes the eye" is an interesting contrast and could represent the way in which even the most seemingly beautiful things can become tainted or corrupted.

Overall, the lyrics of March of the Fire Ants are abstract and open to interpretation, but what is clear is the sense of chaos and destruction that pervades throughout the song.

I don't normally comment on Music Videos, but here is what I know about this song and the album it's on in general:

This is one of the heaveist songs I have heard in years. Nearly went deaf blasting this song with my headphones on while running a Tempo Run back on Monday.

The album name Remission apparently means to forgive.

The drummer Brann Dailor used Remission to help him cope with the aftermath of his sister's suicide. She took her own life when he was 15 (he was born in 1975, so it happened in 1990). I can only imagine the rage he had to withstand while making this album back in 2001-ish.

I almost forgot that I saw this group live back in 2013 during the Mayhem Festival. I did not know their music that much at that time. Now my current favorite song by Mastodon is either Blood and Thunder or The Czar.

@TheEleteBassist

The song is written from the darkest, most depressed and hopeless place imaginable

"as passion encircles the daily storm
the heart bleeds and droughts do not"

Through the chaos and darkness of what the individual perceives to be life, he still has a passion and an ambition.

But no matter how hard he tries and how passionate he is, he gets nothing in return and reality doesn't reciprocate. A drought of reward and feelings of success

"bone grave
bone engraved
stone grave
stone engraved"

Bone grave: I'm dead inside
Bone engraved: I'm destined for failure and mediocrity, it's the fate carved into my bones
Stone grave: After my drought and failure I'll die
Stone engraved: I'll be remembered as a failure, it'll be on my tombstone

"all circles created with intention"

I'm fairly certain one of the boys had a bad acid trip when writing this song

This at once alludes to cycles, and the cyclical nature of the individuals perceived failure, as well as his perception that a higher power or nature itself designated despair and failure as hit fate. As if it was designed that way

"an ocean turns yellow it soothes the eye"

An ocean turning yellow isn't an allusion to how pissy life is. Water turns yellow when sand is very close to the surface of the water.

The allegory being that the ocean is life

He perceives life as extremely shallow and simple. There's nothing else to life, he's figured it out. It soothes the minds eye that he doesn't need to search for further complexity

Very. Dark. Shit

Sometimes I want the excellent riffs and well crafted lyrics
Sometimes I want pure brutal metal with epic solos
And mastodon delivers both

I got hooked to Mastodon fairly recently through their new album, but I must say that I love the fact that Mastodon has a song for every possible moment or "feeling". This song is amazing, Curl in The burl is miles away different and yet is amazing as well. This band is absolutely awesome!!!!

@bob20202020
