Spectrelight
Mastodon Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

We trip the light
Firebird flies
Burn your inside
Given a lesson
The path I've shown
Follow all I know

Into the Spectrelight
Into the afterlife

It came from the ocean
Gift from the sea
Lava forms the stone
Belief in power
Believe the dream
Trust your own truth

Into the Spectrelight
Into the afterlife

You listen through the light
Tolling on the sea
Barren eyes behind you
Leave the shadows waking dreams

Rising through the door
Writing with a knife
Cut speech
Cut light
Cut chord and break the dawning wretch of silence

Trust your own truth
Souls of the fallen
Death of the Godhead
Listen and breathe

Into the Spectrelight
Into the afterlife

Overall Meaning

The song "Spectrelight" by Mastodon ft. Scott Kelly is a very powerful and fiery song. The lyrics describe tripping the light, with a Firebird flying, and burning inside. It is a lesson about trusting and following the path that has been shown. The chorus invites us to go into the Spectrelight and into the afterlife, which could be interpreted as crossing over into another level of consciousness or spiritual realm.

The song continues with a reference to a gift from the sea that came from the ocean and formed into lava stone. The lyrics urge us to believe in the power and the dream, to trust our own truth. The idea of rising through a door with a knife is a powerful metaphor, and could represent breaking through barriers with determination and strength. The song ends with the call to listen and breathe, and to enter into the Spectrelight and into the afterlife.

Overall, this song is about pushing through barriers, following your own truth, and reaching a higher level of spiritual consciousness. It is a reminder to trust in yourself and your own power, while also acknowledging that there may be forces beyond us that are guiding us towards a greater understanding.

@Puppetmaster 85 right

@Christopher Combs I agree with that, one of the best metal bands on the planet the last 2 decades, hell they’re one of the best bands in general regardless of genre. Anyway guy above took a gamble and now got turned on to a very special band so it was a gamble that turned out great snd we got another mastodon fan out there which is good, the more mastodon fans the better because the band absolutely deserves it. Also you could say it’s an unfortunate state to be in but you could also say it’s an amazing state to be in because someone in that state gets to listen to mastodon’s glorious discography for the first time, I sometimes wish I was able to experience mastodon again for the first time.

Christopher Combs

@Puppetmaster 85 thats an unfortunate state for people who have not heard mastodon songs

Puppetmaster 85

@Christopher Combs it was probably a gamble for him because he wasn’t that familiar with the band.

@Keith Barlow what i said is true regardless

I swear that I do not understand why people think The Hunter isn't a good album, it is PROBABLY my fav from their entire discography.

Agree, it's so killer

Seriously it’s so dumb, not my favorite from them but it’s a damn good album with some awesome shit on it. Surprisingly it’s one of their highest reviews albums from music critics but for some reason some fans like to act like it’s shitty. This song/blasteroid/thickening/dry bone valley/black tongue/all the heavy lifting are just fuckin fantastic, there are no bad songs on this album.
