Ships In The Night
Mat Kearney Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Like ships in the night
You keep passing me by
Just wasting time
Trying to prove who’s right
And if it all goes crashing into the sea
If its just you and me
Trying to find the light
Like ships in the night letting cannonballs fly
Say what you mean and it turns to a fight
Fists fly from my mouth as it turns south
You’re down the driveway
I’m on the couch
Chasing your dreams since the violent fifth grade
Trying to believe in your silent own way
'Cause we’ll be okay, I’m not going away
Like you watched at fourteen as it went down the drain
Your pops stayed the same and your moms moved away
How many of our parents seem to make it anyway
We’re just fumbling through the gray
Trying to find a heart that’s not walking away

Turn the lights down low
Walk these halls alone
We can feel so far
From so close

Like ships in the night
You keep passing me by
Just wasting time
Trying to prove who’s right
And if it all goes crashing into the sea
If its just you and me
Trying to find the light
Like ships in the night
You're passing me by
You're passing me by
Like ships in the night

I’m at the airport waitin’ on the second plane
Had to pack, you had cramps,
And I was late heading to a red carpet
They wont know my name
Riding in silence
All that we wanna say
'Bout to board when you call on the phone
You say I’m sorry I’ll be waitin’ at home
Feels like we’re burning this out on our own
Trying to find our way down a road we don’t know

Turn the lights down low
Walk these halls alone
We can feel so far
From so close

Like ships in the night
You keep passing me by
Just wasting time
Trying to prove who’s right
And if it all goes crashing into the sea
If its just you and me
Trying to find the light
Like ships in the night
You're passing me by
You're passing me by
Like ships in the night

I’m gonna find my way
Back to your side

I’m gonna find my way
Back to your side

Like ships in the night
You keep passing me by
Just wasting time
Trying to prove who’s right
And if it all goes crashing into the sea
If its just you and me
Trying to find the light
Like ships in the night
You're passing me by

You're passing me by
Like ships in the night

Overall Meaning

The song "Ships In The Night" by Mat Kearney is about two people who keep exchanging passing encounters but never really connect. The metaphor of ships in the night suggests that both individuals are on different paths, never aligning, leaving each other behind with a sense of emptiness. They argue over trivial things, finding it difficult to communicate and put their point of view across. The lyrics "Trying to prove who's right" highlights how both of them are adamant to impose their opinions, not realizing the importance of listening and understanding the other person. The phrase "If it all goes crashing into the sea" in the chorus emphasizes the possibility of their relationship breaking apart and both finding themselves alone. But they still try to find a way out, "Trying to find the light."

The song has a melancholic tone with minimalistic instrumentation, which highlights the mood of the lyrics. Kearney uses powerful imagery to portray the emotional disconnection between the two individuals. The line "Chasing your dreams since the violent fifth grade" suggests that one of them might have been struggling for a very long time with their own demons, leaving little time for the other person. The song touches upon various themes such as miscommunication, insecurity, and the fear of losing someone you love.

Second Chance Church? - mankind got already 3 chances. What we did? - blow these all up.
1st chance before the flood,
2nd chance before the Sodom And Gomorrah,
3th chance NOW - IN OUR TIME AND AGE.

Pardon me for appearing as a bot and a scammer (for some reason people like calling me these):
But all i share, even if the same comment is shared too often and to many souls, all is what we all should know.
And all those who preach and share the biblical verses, none give out the clearance of why and what the reason for some verses in bible, and why a biblical verse says what it says:

Let use an example with this verse:
Revelation 18:4 And I heard another voice from heaven, saying, Come out of her, my people, that ye be not partakers of her sins, and that ye receive not of her plagues.
This verse gives a message to leave the false reality and therefore our false lives in the matrix behind for good.
Now the clearance why:
To all those who praise all these man made schools and lives in the matrix: All these dudes and madams, who work it politics and in schools systems, as professors in uni and who`s opinions are ye all so willing to hear and take a listen - all are MASONS or the puppets of them (freemasons) and who Freemasons are? - LIARS, STEALERS, MURDERERS. Ye want to be one of them? - then keep listening and living after their opinions. John Chapter 8 44 Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it. That single verse, perfectly describing who the MASONS are and also, who is the master they serve: THE BAPHOMET aka lucifer.

My message is always been clear: LEARN AND STUDY THE BIBLE AND SEARCH ALL OUT ABOUT THE POPULAR DEATH CULT, FREEMASONRY. Thats why I use the short form often: BIBLE + FREEMASONRY.

And the reason why I have no videos no content produce by me, is because I don´t have nothing valuable nor pointfull enough to do a video about

All singers, actors, models, politics, all are trans, re - created in the image of the baphomet.
Fire is known to clean, therefore burn up all evil,
- DVDs, CDs,
- magazines,
- self helping books, (BIBLE IS ALL WE NEED).

@SerandibBroadcast

What a surprising thing just happened.
There was a local channel dedicated to music and I first saw this song back in 2012.
I m from Sri Lanka btw.
I didn't know the singer but loved the voice and music. But for 8 years I couldn't find this.
I played this song in my head from the little lyrics I did remembered in my head through out this 8 years of time.
Today, Out of the blue, a recommended video of Echosmith shows up on my home page, which is their new song with Mat Kearney.
Then suddenly a light bulb came upon and I was like, Hey is that the singer I m looking for?
Yes he is. I loved the song and good thing I found it.
Thanks @Mat Kearney

I first found this song during what I call “the greatest time” of my life. I had a fun job, met and let some foreign exchange students move in with me. It was such a beautiful time. Had some good times with both my parents.

But soon after the kids went home to China. My mother passed away and so did my dad. I quit the job and it took awhile to find my footing. But I just finished school and I now have a daughter.

Sorry for the long post. But seriously this song brings tears to my eyes. Reminds me of the good times and the people that have also moved on. Thank you Mat Kearney.

That's touching

@im-mj3gk

I hope you are doing better now. Lots of love and positive energy to you and all your loved ones!

I also have a similar attachment to this song. I was 16 when I first heard it, my entire family was together from around the country for a cousins wedding. It kept coming on the XM radio in our rental car, everything seemed so blissful and amazing, surrounded by those I love making memories exploring new places. Each time I listen I’m taken back to that amazing week we had together. Thanks for sharing your story and reminding me of my own. x
